I can’t explain in technical terms but it definitely seems like they boosted everything to an 11 on sound that year! All corps just sounded bigger and louder

That cut to the drum major right before the end always gets me super emotional. I hope she still remembers how great this was and still is.

I love the song that starts at 13:09, it reflects the sadness we all feel once the reality that our marching careers in DCI are over sets in and unless we are in college university bands or we turn alumni corp, we will never march again. For many of us, it ended on DCI finals night.

You know Shostakovich himself would be sitting on the edge of his seat: "Wow, why didn't I think of that!!"

After 28 years, this show has aged so incredibly well. A master class in so many aspects... minimalist everything... just black / red... brass, percussion and color guard... this is one of my few 'go to' shows when I need an old school Regiment fix! Bravo!

I continue to assert that The Tubes is one of the best American Rock bands ever, musically speaking. The stage shows were brilliantly performed to the point where cheesy was even brilliant. The arrangements and compositions largely due to Bill (Sputnik) Spooner's work. Not having seen this recording before, thank you. For whatever it's worth, no other band was doing work this complex. That stands to this day, for the most part.

If i remember correctly, they went to Cactus h.s.in Phoenix, same as Alice Cooper and they played house ,clubs till Tubes left for better clientele in San Fran, Cooper always remained in Phoenix, the digs were infinitly better than teenage years

I feel like, if Shostakovich could write drill, this would be the drill he'd write for this show. Part compulsive straight lines, part neurotic blobs, part anxious sharp angles, and part genius curves. This show is DSCH to a tee and it really makes you feel different. It's a feeling without a name, when you see something and know you've just witnessed genius.

I love this show to death, honestly. Phantom Regiment is my favorite corps and Shostakovich is my favorite composer. Having said that... <deep breath> Realistically, they were the 3rd place corps that night. Both The Cadets and Blue Devils were better. I even think Phantom had better corps in 1995 and 1997. What this 1996 show does though is hit a zeitgeist and it's very "controlled" and "precise, " elegant, even, in contrast to their competitors who were trying their best to be the fastest and wildest. So, on Finals night, it worked to be different and they tied for first place. It's a great corps and great show. The percussion book was pretty great and the horn sound was rich af. Even the color guard was on point. That said, yeah, The Cadets and Blue Devils had a higher performance to me.

I was at the new PPHS (Blue Stars) and due to the Cymbalist unable to attend, I was kidnapped by Bob Sr, and marched there. The only Blue Star to do so. However, we beat the world champions it was Father VS Son. YAY! But we've done so many joint performance (Blue Stars and Band of Gold) side by side! It was awesome!

If you've done any marching at any level, you know how insanely difficult that last piece of drill in the opener is to pull off. And they absolutely smashed it. God I love this show.

I'd say that about the entire opener. So many angular formations that are nearly impossible to clean, and somehow Phantom made it look easy.

The camera work is extremely unprofessional, I believe a six-year-old kid's you could do better. They focus, on a little insignificant things that are going on instead of the Drumline hornline the color guard. Total waste of time and does not represent the organization's at all properly.
