Another master of the instrument, Curtis Fuller told me that Carl Fontana was the best of his era.

I worked with the piano player Joe Gatto in Garwood New Jersey Premier Electric in the 1980's. He was so proud to have been a part of Herbie Fields Quintet.

Guys whoever you are get the mix Correct, you have Frank Rosalino mix here which is great along with others, but on Scuttlebutt and Lucky Duck the trombonist is Sonny Russo not Rosolino at least give Sonny the credit due if you didn’t know well now you have correct information on those two tunes .

This was the first recording I ever heard of these players. Still super impressed by their playing.

Interesting because the VHS upload of this concert only has Urbie and 1 other trombone player (and not this tune) so there must have been more personnel and a lot more music from this event

Fantastic choruses by Fontana.

Best trombonist of all time but just slightly ahead of Urbie, frank, watrous, winding.

Did they record Rosolino with a paper cup and a string here? Uncut? More like understudy recording technician.

Had a few seconds of a chat with Doc Severinsenon on a break and I asked him about Frank. He said that he was the most natural improviser he had ever heard. That's a good description from a great player in his own right.

Agree with all of the comments, nobody like him really on any instrument, endless ideas and chops to pull them off, and makes you smile all over. Was this released commercially? Would love to hear the rest. I wondered if that was McKenna, fine player, but didn’t remind me so much of him.

OMG what a trombone Stud! I wish it would be slower he'd pine the boards at a slower tempo!

I was privileged to accompany these two greats in their last ever performance together when they were guest artists with the University of Texas at Arlington jazz orchestra . They had just finished their August ‘78 live recording session in Vancouver (Trombone Heaven). Live or studio- it made no difference. These guys were musical phenomenons of nature.

Unfettered technique and chordal agility enabled the most musical, fluid solos ever recorded in jazz trombone history. We miss you, Carl! Thanks for posting!!

Carl wasn’t only the greatest jazz trombone artist, but to know him personally was one of the best experience in my life. He was a true humanitarian. I miss him a lot, but I’m so lucky to be able to hear his wonderful music through the years!!!!

Absolutely smooth and melodic solo by Fontana, one of the greatest!
@lorenzomonaco780111 ай бұрын
What a crazy scat...moreover, on trombone, Rosolino's fast ideas never hide his deeply rooted melodic feeling. The way he scats is very similiar to the way he plays, as in Chet...two jazz giants

Rosolino's solo is absolutely beautiful, but also Kolb offers us a true jewel. Underrated pianist and amazing trombone player.
