First of all, well done. What an achievement. And by the look of you during the video, done with relative ease !!. This is probably the most rewarding cycling video that I’ve seen. It’s exactly the sort of riding I’d love to do. Unfortunately, ill-health for 3+ years has prevented me from more than an occasional ride. The scenery was spectacular & the terrain was exactly what I enjoy. I love your channel & it’s really helped me to try & remain positive & hopeful of being able to ride again in the future. One surprise- and concern- for me was you not wearing a helmet !!. I’m pretty sure in your cyclo cross events you were wearing a helmet where I suspect there would be considerably less risk of injury should you come off. Please note this is not a criticism in any way. It just worried me about you riding on open roads, including at night, without head protection. The recent infamous video of Gordon Ramsay was a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of cycling. Mind you the helmet didn’t help his torso judging by the bruising he sustained 😂. Not wishing to end on a negative so I’ll just give you once again my congratulations & respect for a tremendous effort & a great channel. I’m looking forward to seeing your next challenge with anticipation. Thank you.

What a great comment, and thanks for the compliments, though I feel the video was hardly worthy. I am pleased though, to find that there are folks watching them that see the world in a similar to the way I see it, because that's the only way I'm capable of showing it. My objective is always to try to communicate my own experience of the event. On the subject of helmets, or the lack of, it's always a topic that will stimulate conversation: what I'll say is that I'm 'pro-choice' but, as you've already noticed in other videos, I usually wear one. It's not against the rules in audax, and is, in fact, quite common for riders to opt for a cap instead of a helmet. Being comfortable on the bike seems to be the priority. I usually ditch the helmet on warm/hot days but anything else, and back on it goes. Potential speeds, and the proximity of traffic and tarmac are both good reasons to consider wearing one (I never wear gloves either, which are also a good idea in the event of a crash - as would be a good set of motorcycling leathers!). In cyclo-cross I felt far less vulnerable than I do on the roads (even when wearing a helmet). In British Cycling events you're not even allowed to be in charge of a bike without wearing one! Thanks once again for the comment and the thoughtfulness that went into it. Take care. Scott

I was born in Alnwick, lived in Alnmouth, left in 1973. Even now, the hills/fells of Northumberland still look bleak and miserable as ever, I dont get it, theres no beauty in this landscape, even on a bright sunny day, thats why nobody lives there
@thedurhamcow3535Ай бұрын
Well, they say beauty's in the eye of the beholder don't they? Plenty of good folk have described them as bleak, that's for sure but I'm not amongst them. I've lived in and around Durham for most of my life and I'm grateful to have the landscape on my doorstep - even when the clag's down (that's how I learned to use map and compass and got into orienteering). I'd say the hills we have in the North Pennines are perfect for a day out - not too big and not too small. Ideal for running up and down - if that's your thing (it is mine, if I'm not on the bike). Maybe I should do a video to try and convince you! 😄 Thanks for the comment and all the best.

Cheers Ellis. Kirkley was great - in every way. I'd watched quite a few YT videos in which Thorneyford features so it was nice to get to ride on it. Having most recently been a runner (and still am) I'm intrigued by how different a CX race feels. Normally I'd just be thinking about the level of discomfort and whilst that aspect is still there there's a real desire to get to grips with the challenges of the course. It's a few rungs up the ladder in terms of excitement. See you at the next one!

Age is mostly irrelevant. I'm 68 and my club of mostly 60 somethings are some of the fastest riders around. Skill is far more valuable than raw power also, and of course power to weight ratio is important. I'm down to my highschool weight (65kgs) and ride a min of 300kms per week. It's a blast shocking the kids when they ask how old we are!😂 Good on ya for getting there and mixing it up, and nice to see your wife is also supportive and engaged.👍

Thanks for the comment @@robertmuckle2985. I certainly agree that age is irrelevant (at least on a relative basis). Those of us fortunate enough to be blessed with good health, for however long, in later years, do well to take as much advantage of it as possible (hence my venture into CX). Weight's a great indicator of metabolic health (muscle/fat in 'healthy' proportions) that's critical in allowing us to 'jump in' to new activities as the fancy takes us so kudos for being where you are. I don't know if it's becoming a feature of the average cycling club but 60-70 is the largest cohort in mine also. Take care

20th/28 is a fantastic result! My first race I was 32nd/32. I purchased my bike 6 days beforehand and got to ride it once. It rained 4 inches (10 cm) that morning and continued during the event. The bike came with file tread tires and not knowing any better I ran them at 60 psi (4.1 Bar). Sank straight to bottom of the course and just plowed my way around aiming the bike as there was no steering. A sane person would have given up cyclocross but I was hooked!
