IM A total outsider and i know in heat and soul this man was totally innocent . i admire his mon n dad and his sisters for standing by the innocent man who had the straightfordness ot abide jail rather than admit for someat he DID NOT DO . i admire his poor family and i admire Steven. if some of the commentators had even a scientilla of this mand courage and fortrightness they would lower their head s in shame at negative comments . Good luck Stevan and family god bless you all .

The threats from locals suggest that it is possible some people knew who did it, and didn't want it discovered. Those threats should have been investigated. Were they?

I'm sorry, but Stephen Downing remains the chief - the only - suspect for the murder of Wendy Sewell, and the other alternative suspects have been eliminated from inquiries. This is a pretty one-sided look at the case for a TV barrister who pretends to run a real court but is really a circus.

That's right. Cops never bully confessions out of people. Oh, wait. They do quite often. People will admit guilt to shut the narcissists up.

This man was guilty. Police reinvestigated it and he was again the only possible suspect. Also he admitted to both his wife & parents after his release that he had murdered Wendy. Quote < Police reinvestigation Downing found to be the only suspect Following the Court of Appeal overturning Stephen Downing's conviction, the Derbyshire Police reinvestigated the murder under the name Operation Noble. During 2002, they interviewed 1,600 witnesses, at an estimated cost of £500,000 - though Downing himself refused to be reinterviewed.[9] A year after the conviction was overturned, in February 2003, Derbyshire police revealed the findings of their reinvestigation of the murder. 22 other possible suspects had been investigated, many of whom had been suggested by Don Hale during his campaign, and in his book Town Without Pity. One of the alternative suspects was Downing's father, who had been driving the bus that dropped Sewell near her workplace on the morning she was assaulted.[10] All of these alternative suspects were cleared of any possibility of having murdered Wendy Sewell. Downing, meanwhile, was the only suspect who could not be eliminated, indicating that he may have been guilty after all.[9][21] New forensic evidence also pointed to him having carried out the attack.[22] The police had wanted to question Downing about three confessions he made to the murder since his release from prison, including one recorded on audio tape, but he refused to comply.[10][23] A woman who he was in a relationship with had taped him confessing during an argument, and he was also alleged to have confessed to his father on two occasions in 2002 after his release.[10] Although he had refused to be interviewed for the reinvestigation, Downing issued a formal complaint after the findings were announced, saying: "They said that they would do a thorough investigation into the matter - they have not done".[22] An independent committee set up to oversee the police investigation later concluded that the inquiry had been completely fair and that they were satisfied with the integrity and rigour of the investigation.[24] Downing's solicitor was among those on the committee and himself concluded that the investigation had been fair.[24] After failing to link any other person with the murder, and unable to eliminate Downing as the suspect, the police declared the case closed and said they were not looking for anyone else.[23] Even though Downing remained the prime suspect, under the "double jeopardy" rules in place at the time a suspect could not be re-arrested and charged with a crime they had previously been acquitted of.[9] The police said that, had the law been different, they would have applied to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to again charge Downing with the murder.[9] The findings of the investigation led to public doubts over whether he should have been released.[10] unquote

Public should call for police to be prosecuted under these circumstances. Disgusting. I’ve seen way too many of these cases. Poor Steve. My sons have special needs and this kind of thing terrifies me. They don’t even keep child killers in prison that long here. It’s just so abhorrent.
