Great video thanks for sharing. Here in Australia back in the day we had a great selection of Utes with Holden, Ford and Valiant leading the way with some great Ute combinations and Japanese and some European following but sadly we firstly lost the European brands like Morris and Valiant in the late 70s becoming Mitsubishi and Holden and Ford stopping production of cars here in Australia in 2017 and 2016 respectively with the Holden brand being killed off by parent company GM in 2022. Today we no longer have traditional Utes which have been replaced by diesel largely twin cab pickups. You mention Utes to me and I remember my 2006 VZ Holden Commodore SS Ute and a lot of great road trips and good times.

The main reason why the utes eventually fizzled out is that pickup trucks became desirable. Back when the original Austrailian utes came out the basic concept is that people wanted a car but needed a pickup, and a car with a bed on the back was a good compromise. This as back when pickup trucks were generally owned by farmers, ranchers and tradesmen and the few pickups owned by suburbanites usually belonged to outdoorsmen. Then, for reasons, the pickup and off road vehicles started becoming popular with the general populace in the 1970s. The main reason that the El Camino remained popular was that trucks of that era were still rough riding and somewhat clumsy to drive. Thus, people who occasionally used a truck for light hauling had a reason to own a ute. Then, over time their ride and handling qualities were refined until the point where there was little reason to really own something like an El Camino. Pickups were considered cool and were almost as easy to drive as a car so that's what people bought. Its curious that the new car based Ford Maverick, actually looks like a pickup. This kind of suggests that modern Americans actually want a truck but want one that's less expensive and has less fuel consumption.

I love the SSR for it's weirdness alone, and I appreciate they added a nice V8, but I can easily see its issues. One, the top. I think it's neat, but would've worked better as a solid roof or removable hardtop. Two, that bed. It's a decent size, but the high side and narrow dimensions likely make it a pain in the ass for daily use. I still want it.

I like to mention here we are in the 21st century and Cadillac was still at it with the elr. That was based on the volt, which itself was codeveloped on/with the Cruze which itself replaced the cobalt which replaced the cavalier. So relatively recent history tells us Cadillac is still at it. I believe that division is lost in trying to find itself in trying to be like its competitors. Few makes can pull off alphanumeric names and I dont believe Cadillac is one of them. There was a lot of clout in el Dorado, Seville, de ville, Fleetwood, names I will never forget. 20 years from now i will think, et5, xt6, what were those and who built them?

Its the plauge of the shitty podcars of the 21st century. Nothing is unique they're all identical colorless conformist angry-headlight blobs and Cadillac's personality is a casualty of that. Some say Cadillac became too depressed to fight it after GM killed Her girlfriend Oldsmobile. Others will say its something about japanese cars or whatever. But i know it, like most of the average american's problems is caused by capitalism and its infinite growth model allowing it to pretend like what customers want doesn't matter and brands pump out shittier and shittier products hyped up with garbage nobody wants and promoted by bot accounts nobody believes. But like store shelves full of migraine inducing LED light bulbs, capitalism doesn't believe in freedom of choice. Note, of course, that capitalism is an economic model that favors the rich and is only maintained by infinte growth. Its why cars and houses are unafforable and continue to get more expensive while minimum wage has stayed at the number $7.25 for decades while inflation rendered that number even less livable. Even $15 an hour is no longer livable, as it had been years ago when the fight for it began. Oh yeah and cars have been sharing models and platforms since the 1950s and earlier. To say this is just a Cadillac "fall from grace" makes ya sound like an ignorant fool with a chip on your shoulder. Idk maybe you are? If so then buy a car worth driving like the rest of us who hate this modern shit. So, blame the correct thing or muzzle your dog. End of story.

*Research please!* Appalling untruth: Cadillac was NOT 2nd US car co. Duryea (1985), Oldsmobile (1897) and others predated Buick & Cadillac. Easy to find the info online!

In my opinion, the Cimarron wasn't the worst because the GM J Cars weren't really that bad. The Cimarron was just guilty of bad badge engineering. The worst Cadillacs ever in my opinion wasn't the cars themselves, but it was the engines: the 1981 only V8-6-4 and the HT 4100 V8 from 1982-87. I would not include the 350 V8 Diesel because it's an Oldsmobile designed engine, not a Cadillac.

The Cimarron was the same as all other GM "J" body cars they did the GM thing and went after BMW and other European cars (brought a pocket knife to a gun fight). The full size Caddys of the 70's that started to rust before the 36 mo. Loan was up would be call for worst.

In Europe we have had the J-body as (Vauxhall) Cavalier or Opel Ascona too. It was a very reliable, useful and decent car. It's only serious issues were rust and boredom.

Not worst car ever. He had three bad aspects: price (from 11k, like body-on-frame fullsize) and bad quality (assemblied in Freemont NUMMI, CA and second plant in San Diego), and light duty Hydramatic. That's my opinion.

Like many GM boo boos of the era, they finally got the Cimarron right in its last two years. The V6 Cimarron, along with style tweaks, was not awful. The model that really bombed for Cadillac was the Catera.

Bought new in 1988. The final year was okay. Mine had a bigger engine and GM pulled the plug. I traded the car in 1989 for new Mercedes. I don't believe the car was ever Cadillac quality. In. My opinion. Mine was okay and everything did work as it should. Thank you

I don't know. If this is the worst Cadillac ever - and it was just a dreadful, dreadful car - the Caterra and the RIDICULOUSLY absurd identity-crisis-on-wheels called the Alanté are tied for a very close second worst.

Так и есть. У платформы J-body кузова асконовские (правда, подвеска и мелочи вроде моторного щита свои). Идея-то интересная, но он стоил от 11 тысяч долларов, как рамный фуллсайз в минималке. Салон не люксовый - у соплатформенных Кавальера и Фиренцы он почти такой же, но они в два раза дешевле. Вообще, эту платформу стоило отдать "спортивному" Понтиаку, пусть делает народный хотхетч и соревнуется с БМВ. А Кадиллаку - перейти на передний привод не в 85-86 году, а в 80-82, когда Х-боди поступила в массовое пр-во. Пораньше начать делать алюминиевый НТ-4000 серий и главное - не забрасывать технологию отключения цилиндров, а модернизировать её.

Perhaps the most eye popping statement in this video is that the Cavalier was once a competitor to the Accord. What a joke that has proven to be.

Not sure if Cimmarron was trying to be a sports sedan, but it wasn't a bad car overall. Certainly not great- but not bad by econobox standards. The first Catera's were actually worse market wise than the Cimmarron. However, neither Cimmarron or Catera were worse than diesel powered models of the late 70's and early 80's. Early 80's Full size models had all the luxury and elegance anyone could ask for in a luxury car, but the HT4100 Powertrain was one of the worst powertrains of the entire decade. I'd say the worst Cadillacs were late 70's diesels followed by early 80's HT4100 powered cars. The Cimmarron was actually reliable and 85 on up models powered by the 2.8 performed quite well.

Fair point. I think much of the ire directed at the Cimarron is due to people perceiving Cadillac as being lazy with a rebadge instead of creating a more original model. That said, even if it's not their worst car, it's definitely still disappointing when put next to some of their best models.

@@2010HarleyDynaFXD The Escalade is a very impressive upscale version of the Tahoe, worthy of the Cadillac name. The Cimarron was an overpriced, underpowered, cheaply made, frumpy looking and totally unimpressive version of the Chevy Cavalier. The Cimarron was an embarrassment to the Cadillac name.
