I've been running a VX40 with a Platinum mousse up front on my XCw. I ride in southern New England(mostly), we have extremely varied terrain and conditions. I found the VX40 damn good in some areas and plain scary in others, I also didn't get good wear out of it, the side knobs started peeling away pretty quick and I don't even race. So as a weekend, recreational rider, I'm going to the VE35 \ VE33 combo. I'm rarely riding on the bleeding edge, I just need tires that work in varied conditions and that last. My go to setup for years has been Tubliss in the rear and a 4mm UHD tube up front. I'm going to scrap the mousse, I'm not impressed enough with it for the cost, go back to a UHD tube when I scrap the VX40.

You commented on the VX40 front tire’s soft carcass. Using pressures that are typical, the VX40 does feel soft. On the positive side, this is a comfortable tire that hugs the ground and doesn’t deflect off of rocks and roots. I’m sure that’s one reason Rich Larsen chooses the VX40 front from among all the IRC front tires for his hard enduro setup. On the negative side, the tire can roll in higher speed cornering, as you experienced. Regardless of how a rider might value this carcass construction, there’s a lot to like about this tire’s rubber compound and tread pattern. I run mousses. Nitromousse specifies a 220 mousse for the VX40, but these recommendations don’t take into account a tire’s carcass character. The stiffness of a tire is the function of two things: carcass construction and the outward pressure created by the internal material - air or foam. A really stiff tire often performs better with a smaller or softer (Plussie) mousse; a flexible tire like the VX40 can benefit from a larger or stiffer mousse. After trying the Platinum 220 mousse in the VX40 and finding the tire too soft for faster speeds, I added a 4 inch wedge to the 220 mousse. The added firmness of the larger mousse volume tamed the carcass roll. Using that setup, this tire checks all the boxes for me.

Living in the interior of BC, we have everything from high speed to super technical gnarly, to loose baby head rock crap. And it's truly amazing! I also have some minor nerve damage in my left hand (median nerve)... From a 24hour marathon race. That's what triggered me buying it. I now won't ride without it! Worth absolutely every penny!

I’m on a 24 TX300 and don’t notice the frame stiffness but I also don’t ride a lot of rocks. The only thing I have done to mine is Nihilo dual start/stop switches and Rouge v2 grips. Next up is suspension then I’ll start experimenting with fueling/engine performance. Overall, I love this bike.

Thanks for your review. I've just purchased 24 XC 300 with less than 10 hours on it and I still own a 22 EX300 with TWP Head and injector relocation kit. Have to say having first ride I don't like the throttle response. Not sure if there is an issue with this bike but the gurgle you mention in pretty bad at 1/8 1/4 throttle. It rips up top and is clearly stronger than my other bike, but the EX 300 throttle response is so clean this is disappointing in comparison. The chassis and suspension are clearly superior. The bike feels like its super rich low down and I had spooch coming out the end which my other bike never does. Its got a oil injection delete kit and running it at 50:1 as per TWP recommendation. Running the new bike at 60:1 . Sounds like the TWP might be the ticket to clean up the throttle response at the bottom end.

Getting a new map/tune for the ECU will definitely solve most of the rich low speed issues. It's a notorious issue with the TBI bikes (even worse on the XC-W). The TSP power kit makes the XC a tractoring beast.

One thing to remembere, ECUs are programed to operate at certain temps,, For example, My 23 gas gas 250TPI will not run correctly unless it is 165° or higher. Then it runs like a raped ape. Bikes are tuned to run rich at startup until they are warmed up. If you touch the throttle you will foul the plug Before a 120°. The best mode you can do for your bike is a temperature sensor so you can keep track of the temperature. And you will know when to tune it and what to do. Never remove thermostats. They are needed for correct operating temperature. I have a Coober ECU and my bike runs great, 165 hours and going strong. My first top end change will be around 200 hours, Do not believe everything you hear on the internet most of it is lack of knowledge, just simply think about what you are doing, And how the bike was built. Fuel injection is a wonderful thing.

I have an IRC DOT knobby front from the previous owner (I forget the specific model), and it’s substantially worse off road than the Shinko 705 rear, which surprised me. Anything remotely loose and the front goes; I wasn’t expecting to need to replace it immediately from the look, but it’s dicey riding on the dry roads of Colorado when it slips out on hard pack with even a hint of sediment.

Kenda tires work pretty good here in Utah. Motosport carries most of their line. The Southwick II is similar to the m5b, but comes in standard sizes and well priced. The Artrax bibs work well. That is motosports house brand. $99.

@podpocalypse9817 i put about 40hrs on mine and pulled out to compare it with the nuetech and it was still ing great shape. It did feel softer inside the tire for some reason, but the front tire hookup was great. Fast riding it did have a little roll when cornering hard, but I believe this could be fixed by adding a wedge cut from an older mousse. Ive still got it and plan to reinstall it in the near future. Or use it as a wedge. You can also buy Mr. Wolf spare mousse balls to use as a wedge if needed.

Skip that rubber grommet and put a valvestem in there so you can pump lube in without dismounting the tire. After 20 min of riding it's evenly distributed and will extend the life of the mousse. A tube every 25 hours or so is good.

The Mr. Wolf moose balls are my favorite so far as it is a segmented moose bib. The lube in between the individual section seems to give it a little more longevity and a slightly more natural feel. Also, as parts of it wear out you can replace individual mooseballs or tune to various pressures

I have a good bit of experience with the VX40. It was designed and is advertised by IRC as a hard terrain tire which will extend into intermediate dirt. It will get you through thicker soil without much drama, but hard ground is where it shines. The trails I ride in North Texas are hard packed 90% of the time, and I find the VX40 gives me excellent lean angle traction and sharp braking. When there is a thin covering of dust, which is often here in the summer, you need a dense layout of knobs against the ground; the more spaced out pattern of an intermediate terrain tire just won’t inspire the confidence of the VX40. So this tire is a specialist that does a great job where it was meant to roll.
