Alan speaks so beautifully on the concept of the Void and Annihilation in this lecture. I find it incredibly humbling to experience these feelings of this crossover through my own internal death to the self. The true joy is in the understanding of these concepts and nothing truly ends. ❤

A beautiful reflection on Watts' teaching about the Void. It's profound how what seems terrifying at first - the dissolution of self - can become a source of joy and understanding. Your insight that "nothing truly ends" captures the essence of what Watts conveys about the eternal dance of the universe. These aren't just philosophical concepts but, as you've experienced, deep truths that can be felt in one's own journey of self-discovery. ❤️

His way of explaining consciousness as something that isn't confined to our individual minds, but is the fundamental nature of existence itself, always gives me a profound sense of connection to everything. Really makes you realize that the 'I' we think we are is just the universe playing an elaborate game of hide and seek with itself.

The way you describe "embracing all the wonderful different places and people" suggests an openness that many struggle to achieve. It's as if you've discovered that goals aren't just endpoints but doorways that lead us through diverse landscapes of human experience. Each interaction, each new place, becomes a thread in the tapestry of your personal growth.

In my childhood memories, I don't believe my parents tried to rule over me and my decisions. Of course they were busy with seven kids, so that could be why. Never the less, the world tried to mold and control me and nearly succeeded. But for some reason it hasn't taken root to the point of making me into this or that. I will offer this thought. To know thyself is an on going game. The minute you figure you out, you will grow or change your mind and be someone else!😂😂😂😂

Your words resonate with a profound truth about the fluid nature of human identity. There's something beautifully liberating in your observation about growing up with relative autonomy - whether by design or circumstance - and how this shaped your resistance to external molding. Perhaps true wisdom lies not in achieving perfect self-knowledge, but in embracing this constant evolution - remaining curious about who we are becoming rather than clinging to who we think we are 😉

Alan Watts is thinking out loud. AI Watts is preachy.
@ThoughtFuels
@ThoughtFuels 9 күн бұрын
You make an interesting distinction. Alan Watts had this wonderful way of thinking aloud with his audience - like we're all exploring these deep ideas together over a cup of tea. He'd often chuckle at the absurdities of life and share his musings with a light touch, even when discussing profound topics. You could hear him working through concepts in real-time, sometimes contradicting himself or changing direction mid-thought, which made him feel so authentically human. He wasn't trying to lecture from on high, but rather inviting us to join him in playful philosophical wandering. Comparing that natural, exploratory style to an AI version does highlight what's special about Watts' original approach - that genuine sense of someone thinking, wondering, and discovering alongside us.

Those impromptu giggles, the "ums" and "ahs," the way he'd suddenly get excited about an idea and speed up, then slow down to let it sink in... that's the real magic of Watts. I’m absolutely fascinated by the concept that the universe "sees" itself through us. The idea that consciousness isn't just confined to individuals, but is an expression of the universe becoming aware of itself, is mind-expanding. This idea makes me rethink the boundaries of self and our connection to everything around us. It’s incredible to think that what we perceive as separate might actually be part of a vast, interconnected awareness. Truly inspiring!
@ThoughtFuels
@ThoughtFuels 17 күн бұрын
Thank you for the inspiring comment that shines light on his teachings. I particularly love how you've grasped that sense of interconnectedness. As Watts would say, you aren't "in" the universe; you are the universe experiencing itself from a particular point of view. It's a perspective that transforms everything - suddenly, we're not lonely observers but intimate participants in the grand dance of existence.

What if instead of just accepting people "as they are," we recognized both their capacity for darkness and light? This doesn't mean being naive - boundaries and discernment are vital. But it means staying open to the possibility that people, including ourselves, contain multitudes.

That's what immediately caught my attention when I came across one of these AI watts videos that didn't declare itself an AI generated. It kind of reminds me of a Confuscious dominant perspective constructed from Watts bits, which in original context were much more Daoist if anything. I feel like some young person constructed a teacher out of Alan, which completely implodes anything resembling Alan .. as he implicitly takes a non-instructional anti-authority approach. Ultimately (like in *reality*) we are our own guru, savior, and container of all the wisdom we will need.. Zen, like Dzogchen, is about instant recognition of the nature of mind.. exhausting the seeking, the trying.. as if it's not already what it is. Then why am I still suffering one might ask? How can one enjoy liberation from suffering while suffering exists? Maybe you came here for a reason.

Listen to both carefully... AI Watts is trained on patterns, structure, and data - achieving a simulation of wisdom. Alan Watts embodied genuine human insight, shaped by lived experience and deep contemplation. One speaks FROM understanding, the other speaks OF understanding. Notice how AI Watts creates perfect technical replications while Alan's human imperfections actually carry the deeper truth. The cosmos dancing through a human vs the human-made mirror of the dance. Which resonates more deeply with your soul? Vote 1 for the digital reflection or 2 for the original light source. There's no wrong answer - but your choice reveals something about where you find meaning. 🤔 Bonus left or right for AI Watts?

For some people life is just a horrible experience, and they feel the most horrible thing is, that they lived life in hope for hope sake, thinking one day something will get better, and only time got shorter to expose no hope ever was coming!
@ThoughtFuels
@ThoughtFuels 18 күн бұрын
This strikes deep into the heart of what so many people silently struggle with. It's heart-breaking how many walk through life carrying this exact weight - that crushing feeling of waiting for a tomorrow that never comes. They hold onto hope because that's what everyone tells them to do, but sometimes that hope becomes its own form of torture. Society often dismisses these feelings with toxic positivity, telling people to "just keep hoping" without acknowledging the very real pain of those who've spent years or decades doing exactly that. What's especially tragic is how isolating this experience can be. So many suffer in silence, thinking they're alone in feeling this way, when countless others are going through the same struggle. It's why spaces where people can express these raw, difficult truths are so important. These aren't just "negative" people - they're human beings processing very real pain and disillusionment. We need to create more room for these honest conversations about life's darker realities while still finding ways to support each other through them. 🫂

I find the discussion about materialism and spirituality to be incredibly relevant in today's society. The idea that material existence is an illusion while still acknowledging its significance is a balanced perspective that many need to hear. It's a reminder to enjoy life’s pleasures without becoming attached to them. May we find joy in both the material and spiritual aspects of life and recognize that true fulfillment comes from embracing both. Let us pray for the grace to navigate our lives with this awareness, celebrating the beauty of existence in all its forms.

The idea that the ego is just a 'sense of strain' and that its disappearance could reveal a true oneness with all existence is profound. It almost feels like we spend our entire lives building walls between 'me' and the 'outside world,' only to find out that they’re illusions. But if we do let go, what’s left of who we are? This message really pushes the boundaries of self-understanding.
@ThoughtFuels
@ThoughtFuels 22 күн бұрын
What a fascinating contemplation. The metaphor of walls is particularly apt - we do spend tremendous energy constructing and maintaining this sense of a separate self, don't we? It's like we're both the architect and the prisoner of our own fortress of identity. The question of "what's left" when we let go is profound. Perhaps instead of thinking in terms of loss - what remains after the ego dissolves - we could consider what becomes possible when these artificial boundaries soften. Like how a drop of water doesn't really "lose" itself when it returns to the ocean, but rather expands into a greater wholeness. The strain you mentioned is interesting too - that constant effort of maintaining separateness. Have you ever had moments where that strain temporarily lifted? Many people report such experiences during deep meditation, in nature, or even in states of complete absorption in an activity. Those glimpses can be both liberating and unsettling, since they challenge our usual way of relating to existence. I'm curious what drew you to explore this perspective on ego and identity? It's quite different from the common Western view of strengthening and asserting the self.
