First you are not counting for DeF fluid or DeF filters and oil changes that EV's do not do! Also Ryder was not using Tesla's Tesla's are way more advanced than the other Ev's trucks! When the trucking companies change over to Ev's they will make the truck lanes to only about 500 mile legs! So many companies are already doing short leg lanes. I use to haul mail from Seattle Wa. to Salt Lake City Utah, I only went half way to Baker City Oregon and another truck came up from Salt Lake City Utah and exchanged trailers and slept over for 10 hours before returning to Seattle Wa. Ev's would work great for that! Get ready Tesla say they are going to build 50,000 trucks a year starting in 2025.
@TrickyMickTruckingАй бұрын
I like Tesla, but I fully agree with Ryder on this. The EVs will also have significantly higher insurance costs due to the high cost of the truck and any replacement parts in an accident. The EV trucks will be great for short haul. 500 mile runs would only be ideal in a perfect scenario, and any tow for low charge would likely negate any cost savings in energy for a few months. We have seen a reduction in rates that will also create another barrier for EVs, since the initial higher cost with financing is a much larger increase than people understand. A typical business loan on a truck is around 12% interest for good credit, and a regular semi truck can be up to $170k new, the EV trucks are around 20% more expensive for most available commercial vehicles minimum. That means an extra $36k financed over 5-7 years, which ends up costing the company $53k MORE than the $170k truck. There's just no real prediction until the trucks are made. And right now? They aren't delivering on the promises they've made. Tesla stock is way down for a reason.
@Rory235Ай бұрын
@@TrickyMickTrucking Some of the thing your talking about is true. We will see in the future! One thing I believe Ev's are coming weather we like it or not! The tow for low charge is a driver training problem. Which we have now with the way the drivers are driving today! Back in the 1980's when I started driving you hardly ever saw a tow truck unless there was a accident. Now tow truck drivers are getting rich from all the tows! @@tonespeaks Plug-In hybrids are a great answer. This application applied to diesel semi trucks is the perfect answer. Consistent rpms with peak efficiency? Maintenance would go down substantially. On average, kys $15k a year per truck for maintenance. $3500 is oil changes. Hybrids would make that $1250 per year or less. But I'd love to get certification to work on EV trucks. That's a gold mine waiting to be discovered.

@@TrickyMickTrucking " Plug-In hybrids are a great answer." Actually they have been a huge failure, Plug-in Hybrids don't give a lot of range on Electric, so on Gas it is carrying around a dead battery. More importantly they are not very reliable and cost a lot in maintenance costs/time. They are an OK substitute for urban environments, but the technology is dead, no one is really investing money into it. The thing about Electric Semis is that it eliminates almost all the maintenance. It runs on fewer parts and the technology is simple in terms of Mechanics. Since the systems are modular, it is just a matter of swapping out parts, less diagnostics.... in fact the system can even predict trouble before it happens. There is a huge savings on brakes, since regen does most of the stopping. When a driver goes for their mandatory break they can be charging, by the time break is finished... Truck is charged and ready to go. To build charging is easy and not that expensive, plus maintenance is easy and cheap. I think once people get over the fact that the Truck is electric, they will enjoy the benefits and the performance gains. People can't cut in front, in stop and go, since the truck can accelerate with the best of them.
@TrickyMickTrucking5 ай бұрын
Are you aware of the super trucks that were government funded to be developed for reduced emissions? Freightliner, Kenworth, in Volvo all created trucks that are hybrids that get around 16 MPG compared to the average 6 MPG right now. You've also got Edison motors creating plug-in hybrid kits to retro fit older trucks. As an owner, I have no interest in a fully electric truck. I don't think you're fully aware of what's going on in the industry. But this is a good discussion. I hope you do a little more research and learn about some of the stuff that's going on besides electric trucks. I think the high price alone is enough for most owners to stay away. Regular pickup truck compared to the EV version, it's twice as expensive and only cheaper to run if you have access to cheap electricity. And we don't even know what it's going to cost to repair some of these vehicles in 10 years when they start falling apart. Most owners of big trucks would rather put their money into proven technology than take a chance on something new. This is especially true in the fields that would benefit the most from reduced fuel consumption, heavy haul where they get 3 to 5 MPG. Edison motors has solved that problem with their hybrid that uses a smaller diesel engine. I personally believe that biofuels and synthetic fuel are going to reach a point of competitive price that will be carbon neutral in reality. There are already three manufacturers working on synthetic fuel and renewable diesel. We already have up to 20% renewable diesel fuel in our tanks.@tonespeaks

This is definitely part of it. But not something to worry about too much. AI automation won't be taking many truck jobs for a long time, if ever. This is a great video. Love seeing in depth analysis based on real world context. In general I'm in support of the transition to EV usage, but it can't be done in every circumstance or immediately. In regards to trucking, I think it could be massively benificial and adopted at a large scale, but I think it will happen strategically and will by no means become the dominant trucking model any time soon. It won't make sense for general purpose long haul trucking without significant improvements to power density, charging speed, grid capacity, and efficency. However, there are a variety of places where it may hit a sweet spot given their current model of through optimizing their model to the constrains of EVs. Companies like Pepsi are a perfect example, but really anything that is running at large scales on extremely regular routes might want to consider them. My dad was a truck driver and used to make regular runs of the same car parts from a supplier to an assembly plant dozens of times a year. In circumstances like that, you can start with using EV vehicles specifically on routes that are optimal and will essentially gurantee cost reduction. At a larger scale for companies such as wal-mart, FedEx, and Amazon, accounting for EV range, grid capacity, and electricity pricing when choosing locations for distribution centers may allow for significant increases in efficency. Also, the average density of your load will come into play. If you're hauling steel, EVs are a joke. If you're hauling potato chips and Twinkies, EV will make a lot more sense. As you keep pointing to, context is everything, and in certain contexts I think EV will be an obvious winner, but it will be limited to specific niches for the forseeable future.
@TrickyMickTrucking5 ай бұрын
I love EV when it makes sense. We had a 2014 Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid that was incredible. I agree with you 100% If you haven't heard of Edison Motors yet, check them out! They are using a smaller cat motor as a generator that utilizes electric axles. They can be used as entirely electric or use the diesel generator. From my math, we should be able to get trucks that used to do 4mpg up to 9mpg and regular stuff like Pepsi or Walmart up to 16mpg. Looks very promising. I think a lot of people underestimate the amount of energy it takes to move up and down mountains. But in theory, a long downgrade could regenerate a lot of energy to be utilized on the next uphill rather than being wasted entirely.
