How would you compare the use and serviceability of the vintage Zebcos vs the higher end new ones?
@OutFishing13Matthew5 күн бұрын
That is a great question and a good idea for a video. Old vs New. Some years ago, Zebco started making different classes of reels that varied in quality. The USA made 33s were a mid-quality reel and was very durable and highly serviceable. It generally had steel gears and steel bushings. It was easy to service and was very tough, providing years of service if taken care of. I still use 33s that are 30-40 years old and they work great. I have some old 808s that are 50 years old and I use them for cat fish. The USA made Omegas are of high quality and had bearings. Top of the line reels. When operations moved to China, some quality went down, but some went up. The 33s have pot metal or aluminum gears, but had brass or plastic bushings. Or the gold or platinum 33s had bearings. The Omega and Delta has brass gears and stainless bearings. I have seen some of the China made 33 with stripped out gears and unusable. I don't want to discourage you though. Most problems to a reel occur when the reel is abused, like setting trying to undo a snag without setting the drag really tight or holding onto the line. Or the reel is never serviced and lubed. The China made and USA models are great reels and will last you many seasons when properly used and serviced.
@Shankdaddy165 күн бұрын
@@OutFishing13Matthew I like that you can still get high quality spin cast reels, a video on new vs old reels would be very interesting! I’ve been repairing the old ones I find and your videos have been very helpful, I’m glad there are others that like to fix stuff instead of throwing it away.

@@OutFishing13Matthew I disassembled and cleaned mine today. It is substantially different than the 154 in so many ways. It has an oscillating spool. @OutFishing13Matthew7 күн бұрын
It's really hard to say why there is a price difference. I looked and see the price is between $27 and $30 for an 888. The less expensive model may be from 2022 or 2023 and Zebco recently released a new model 888 and Walmart is asking for the MSRP. Who knows?

Matthew, that can't be a 202 as the only 202 with selective anti-rev. was black and made in 1972. Also this reel has a plastic foot and they were made about 1981 and there after. Also the flat know handle was never used on the 202, but was on the 404 about the early 80s. All 202s were stamped Zebco 202 on the hot stamp flat on the reel, except the red 205 which was just stamped Zebco. Your reel has to be a 404 from the early 80s, but I can't find an all gray one in the catalogs. Jim

Jim, Thanks for your comment. I have a few 404s. I will compare them to this one. Did any of the 404s come with the scalloped spinner cone? I hope we can figure out what model this is exactly.
@JamesJones-ll7jw9 күн бұрын
Matthew, the 202 was introduced in 1961 and was called the ZeeBee 202. The 404 came 2 years later in 1963 and was called the BigBee 404 It was a larger version and they both had multi point pickup spinnerheads. The first 202 had a 4 notch spinnerhead that was replaced by a 20 notch a little later and was used the whole run of the USA made 202s. The 404 is a little larger and has 22 notches. I like your videos best because you don't act like a know it all like some do while putting out misinformation. I will let you know if I find out when this reel was made. Jim

@OutFishing13Matthew14 күн бұрын
Well, the ProStaff is no longer manufactured. I seem to recall that a ProStaff was made to used in salt water. I think now Zebco makes a "Salt" version of some of their larger reels. The 888 used to be the ProStaff version of the 808. It now has more bearings and an instant Anti-reverse.

Grease will not impact your casting distance. If you have too much on the moving parts, it may make reeling in a little stiff.

I found one of these at goodwill with a rod for $2. I only bought it for the 6' rod that it was attached to, but I was curious how it fished. I ended up spooling new line on it and it works quite well. The only drawback is heavier lures don't tend to hold well if I whip the cast. The line will start to slip out of the reel before I want to release it. But knowing that I adjust my throw when using it. And I'm probably overburdening it fishing for 5 pound bass LOL. I still use it from time to time. The only thing I don't like is the drag is silent when fish are pulling line. At 19:00 you address that aspect. I might take a look and see whats up with mine. UPDATE: I took the cover off and the top half and found the tip of the drag clicker spring was bent down. I bent it back up and now I have a clicker drag alert! Thanks!

Thanks for watching and commenting. What a bargain. It is a great little reel and is perfect for small pan fish. Specially Crappie, white bass, perch, bluegill and the like. Even trout fishing.
