It seems like your tapedeck calibration is pretty missaligned , no way that maxell and fuji and so on can't be calibrated. First of all start always calibrating with bias and level knob on 0 position!. Put in a SONY HF in the player, open the cover of the tapedeck there have to be two potentiometers there with bias and level labeled. press the calibration button leave the knobs on 0 and turn the potentiometer for bios and level as much until both show in the level meter 0. Congratulation, you have calibrated the deck for Sony HF!. Repeat this test again. You may also chose tho set up the calibration on a TDK D tape instead of a Sony HF that's your choise watch the results and leave the better calibration as default. As type two tapes for default calibration i recommend Sony UCX or (more common used) TDK SA.
