The story of "Bacon Fat" seems to be true but not complete in "Testimony", Robbie Robertson's detailed autobiography. "Bacon Fat" was proposed by Garth Hudson to Duff Roman for recording by Levon and The Hawks on Roman records, Toronto, Canada, (1963 or 6?). Robertson rightly, IMHO, credits Garth and himself as having written "Bacon Fat". There is another, "Bacon Fat" written in 1956 by Andre Williams, who recorded it as a talking Blues for Fortune Records. It became a top-ten hit at that time. Now it's likely Williams' "Bacon Fat" may have been the inspiration for Garth Hudson and Robbie Robertson, who were students of the electric Blues, Jump Blues, and early Rock played along the Chitlin' Circuit. But comparing the two "Bacon Fat" tunes, it's clear: 1. by the different lyrics; 2. by the Hawks' organ & guitar versus Williams' sax instrumentation; 3. and by the beat; that Williams' "Bacon Fat" and the Hudson-Robertson "Bacon Fat" are different compositions related mainly, perhaps only, by sharing the same title. -Doug Pratt, Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

Took me a minute. Started watching the video without seeing the credits and then there he was. A very young Ginger Baker on drums. Love the jam and the over emphasized rocking moves, being made by everyone in the band and the dancers. A wicked 60's video. So cool!

This is great. Very blues based. But Taj Mahal and Jesse Ed Davis covered a song called Bacon Fat that is completely different. Different verse. Everything. I was expecting that one. How many Bacon Fats are there?

For those keen on Jack and Ginger, you can now get Eric Clapton and the Powerhouse doing Crossroads, with Steve Winwood singing, early 66, before Cream and almost Blind Faiith.
