I live in Bathurst, the one on the OTHER side of the world- New Brunswick, Canada. I've built every one of those kits, and my opinion of them ranges from awesome to awful. The Neptune would have to be my fave, save for the poorly detailed cockpit. Follow up with the Orion. That one is the earliest Hasegawa kit (70s), with the old radome/FLIR housing. Again, old Hasegawa never did well with interiors, but it's a good kit. The Lancaster's typical Revell 1960s, not accurate at all but a fun one for beginners, And THEN there's the Airfix Herc. I just built one. Cut off the engines, and replaced the prop spinners, cockpit and tires etc. Kept the ramps and doors closed to hide the lack of interior. Horrible kit, especially now that the Zvezda kit came out. I used stuff from that one to try to make this one better...I still had fun, just because. Cheers!

The Revell Dambuster Lanc is from the Sixties. The C-130 kit seems to be idealised for the Antipodal trade. The US Navy used the P-2 in Viet Nam [OP-2E] for night interdiction on the HoChiMin Trail, but it would be challenging to remove the anti-submarine boom on the tail and mount a twin 20mm tailgun in its place. Also a chin turret under the glass nose. Hobby shops used to sell aftermarket custom decal sheets for modelers too jaded to ever use the box decals. Good score. I wonder why they were so heavily into Lockheed products?

G’day John, What a coincidence. I have all of these kits, in multiples, in my stash and I’ve built at least one each of them. If you don’t do large aircraft models regularly, I strongly advise that you practice on smaller 1/144 scales of these if you can. I served in the RAAF at a point when all these aircraft, except the Lancaster, were still in service with the RAAF. Firstly, If you Google A & E Model C-130s, from 36 and 37 Squadrons of the late 50s and 1960s, you’ll get great pics of how ours looked when they were first delivered and got their Aussie paint schemes. By the way. Australia was the first Allied Air Force to receive the C-130s and we’ve had them continually, to this very day. I reckon those liveries were the best with good colours and shiny metal surfaces. Which we kept spotless inside and out. Just last week I saw the exact same C-130 kit you have there going for USD139.00 (AUD$208.28). So all up you’ve snagged some tremendous bargains. The Orions were our best Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) aircraft and they belonged to No 10 and 11 Squadrons out of RAAF Base Edinburgh. They too had a really interesting paint scheme. Lastly, our Neptune aircraft flew were multi-role ASW that preceded the Orions. They were so good they kept them in service for as long as possible. They also had a great colour scheme of a Dark Blue upper fuselage and a white lower fuselage and underside and interesting ‘bumpy’ radar domes. All of these great airframes provided a solid backbone of our coastal defences post-WW2 into the Korean and Vietnam periods. The bigger the models, the more complex the build process so I can’t stress enough the benefits of practicing on smaller scales until you’re comfortable with how large aircraft are put together. The biggest problem with large model aircraft is getting the wing, horizontal and vertical stabilizer angles perfect. If they are out of alignment, just a bit, it ruins the look. I’ve always found it easier to prime and paint the many smaller parts while still on the sprues. It’s much easier to pay attention to fine, detailed painting because when these small parts are already on the model they can be quite difficult to paint properly without overpainting or over spraying. The ends of the props of the C-130s and the Orians had red, white and black tips, in that order, which looked really cool, especially while turning. Of course, there is a lot more fine sanding along all the joins especially the wings. With older kits you’ll find you’ll use more putty and fine fillers on all the joins so, it’s a good idea to do ‘dry fits’ before you commit to gluing. All the very best, get some practice in and take your big models slowly and you’ll be right. Cheers, Bill H.

Wow, thanks for all the valuable information and taking the time to let me know about the reference pics, history etc. I will do my best to honor the planes legacy. I have started with the Hercules and I already can see the amount of clean up on the parts. It an absolute mess I have the Tamiya putty ready to go, but I enjoy the challenge. I have built both the Millenium Falcon and The Starship Enterprise (videos are on my channel) and they were massive builds, expecially the Enterprise becuase it was a cheap $70 model that I completely fitted out with LED lights and it was a challenge to assemble it give it's odd and unique design. I expect the Hasegawa to be better quality than the AIRFIX. The Japanese like "Bandai Kits" make precision models. Although, technology was the enemy in the 70's and 80's when it can to plastic models. We have come a long way, and even though I haven't purchased a 3D printer as yet, you can print parts for these models if needs be. Wish me luck, and please subscribe (it's free) so when I post the videos in the coming months, you can see the finished products. Pressure is truly on now. Cheers

Looking at the Scalemates website that kit's box art having that painting and those surrounding graphics is from 1965. Kit was released in 1963 as standard bomber, then reissued in 65 with that new box art plus new fuselage underside and the Dambusters special bomb. Same box top art and graphics were used a few times for non-English language issues up to 1980s. Then the painting was used with different graphics in an uncertain year within 1980s. 🙂 So, yep, guaranteed to be a basic plastic kit, no resin or etched metal in the box and no fancy parts done with slide molds! 📃 Oh, Scalemates has where the instructions can be downloaded ... control surfaces except rudders can be movable ... can see how the main gear parts move when retracting ... gonna need some household thread for the bomb spinning drive ... and most importantly, it has a couple full figures and a couple half figures for crew guys.

I’ve thought of a slight work around for selling parts. So when I have cars I want to sell I will always check if I have any parts for it. I add any parts I have and then sell it which increases the value of the car. Granted you don’t get the full “value” of the parts but it’s better than nothing. I guess IRL used parts aren’t the same as new either.
