When I try this I seem to get the 1 elongated stitch. Instead of it looking like the video where you can see it looks like regular sized stitches. I am picking up from the back into the row below as show. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help?

sounds like you are skipping this step: IMPORTANT: On round two, remove your end of round marker, work into the row below as shown in the video and replace your marker. Your end of round marker will move by one stitch.

Awesome technique, thank you! I struggled to understand how to do it just reading your book, because you don't say to drop the loop lifted up over the YO before transferring. Maybe it's obvious, I'm a beginner 😅
@PattyLyonsKnitting
@PattyLyonsKnitting 4 күн бұрын
I don't understand. Do you mean you were trying to end the cast on but leaving your lefthand needle in the stitch? When you pass a stitch over in knitting you remove your needle. Otherwise, it's like leaving your hand on something when instructions say to put it down. Does that make sense? Always take words at face value: After making the YO on your right needle the book says: "Insert the tip of the left needle into the loop on the right and lift it up and over the YO. You now have one stitch on your right needle".

@@PattyLyonsKnitting You are absolutely right, please excuse this mistake due to my lack of experience. I'm just starting out but I like to understand what I'm doing and your book is a goldmine for that! (and yes I was leaving my lefthand needle in the stitch, like in the picture 😅)

Which is use of short rows? Please for your reply.
@PattyLyonsKnitting
@PattyLyonsKnitting 6 күн бұрын
Short rows work a ros short (meaning not finishing a row). This works some stitches for more rows than others. It is used in shaping as well as to create 3 dimensions: things like shawl collars, shirt tail hems, bust shaping, bib front cowls, shoulder shaping, sock heels. Here are a few patterns that show short rows: bit.ly/shortrowpatterns

Thank you, that was very interesting. I may be mistaken, but isn't that just knitting alternate rows right- and left-handed? I find it confusing, because I learned how to knit in Germany, hold the working end of the yarn in my left hand, and wrap it rather than throwing it. For two-color Jacquard, I did try holding one yarn in my left-hand and wrapping and the other in my right and throwing. It worked, but I'm not sure it was worth the effort. With respect to keeping one's orientation in patterns, I always wrote out each row of a complicated pattern (e.g., lace, Jacquard, or a braid) on a file card, in the order of the colors and/or stitches, so I would only be looking at the instructions for one row at a time, and the direction would correspond to the direction of knitting. I've started doing needlework again after a long pause. I found your book of knitting tricks in the German translation at a local bookstore, bought it, and have already found many interesting things in it.

Not at all. This is stranded work FLAT. I think you're focusing on what hand I"m holding my yarn in, rather than what hand I'm holding my NEEDLE in. That's not what the video is about. Notice how I never turn my work around? This has nothing to do with what hand my yarn is in, rather I am working a RS row AND a WS row with RS facing me. I am never purling. Try giving it another watch. Think about what you do when you work stockinette flat. You hold your empty needle in your right hand and knit to the end of the row, then TURN YOUR WORK. Still with the empty needle in your right hand you PURL across. Try giving it another watch.
@laurencefinston7036
@laurencefinston7036 9 күн бұрын
@@PattyLyonsKnitting Thank you for your answer. I will give it another watch, but I did understand what you were doing. When you're working the backward purls, the new stitches go onto the left needle. Isn't that left-handed knitting? It's clear to me that you're not turning the work. What's confusing to me about how the yarn is held is that I can't easily relate it to what's normal for me and see what would be different from normal when one holds the yarn in the right hand and throws it. Leaving aside the two colors, wouldn't it be possible to knit stockinette stitch flat by going back and forth, alternating rows knitting left- and right--handed? It would be a bit like Tunisian crochet. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems to me that If one could just film the yarn taking shape, without seeing the hands and the needles, there would be no way to tell whether they were knits or purls or if the work was being turned or not.
@PattyLyonsKnitting
@PattyLyonsKnitting 9 күн бұрын
@@laurencefinston7036 No, this is not left handed knitting. Left handed knitting is when knitters create the same exact stitch knits and purls, when turning their work. Left handed knitting (also called mirror knitting), has the knitter turning their work, working knits and purls, with needle in left hand. The stitch formation is different then what i"m doing. To learn more about it, you can take this class - education.pattylyons.com/courses/StopTurningKnittingPurlingBackwards

This is an amazing and brilliant video I have a question though ... why would we choose to re knit the last stitch with the color of the first stitch of the next round instead of the color of the last stitch of the next round... I'm afraid that there might be a weird jog if the pattern goes like this ⬛⬛⬜️⬜️l⬛⬛⬜️⬜️ ⬛⬜️⬜️⬛l⬛⬜️⬜️⬛ ⬜️⬜️⬛⬛l⬜️⬜️⬛⬛ ⬜️⬛⬛⬜️l⬜️⬛⬛⬜️ With the line being the stitch marker separating the first and last stitch

What I mean is that the column of the last stitches should follow a pattern of 2 black 2 white etc But by re knitting the last stitch with the color of the first stitch from next round it'll be 1 white 1 black 1 white 1 black
@gikaman9730
@gikaman9730 19 күн бұрын
i.e. in round 1 when we knit the last white stitch we re knit it with black and at the end of the round two w pick up the previous row and we knit a white stitch on top of a black and white thus introducing a black detail in a column that should have two whites .... I might not be visualizing this correctly so sorry if I'm mistaken

Hi Patty! How does this method work IF you’ve worked 3 rounds of pattern doing your method with two colors (navy and cream) and then the 3rd round ++ is a switch of ENTIRELY different colors (mustard and burgundy) so you’re dealing with a jog plus dropping two colours and adding two new at the startof a round? How do you approach the end of round 2 and transition, capture the right yarns and keep going?

Patty: I am totally IN for another Scotland trip! I'd vote for all-Scotland (Scotland and Ireland together could leave one feeling you're not getting enough of either, plus I've done Ireland so really want a deep dive in Scotland). And yes, start off in Edinburgh and have the tour company arrange the transport up to Shetland or to the Hebrides from there.... lots of folks might find it a challenge to navigate up to the ferry or to the little flights to Shetland. I'll start saving pennies for 2026. I'd also be up for Denmark, but more Scotland first!
