If you are desperate for eggnog, why not make your own! But as a European I would have mulled wine or glögg, both lovely and pretty much the same (and you can make your own!!!). I wouldn’t trust any shop eggnog as it is bound to be teeming with additives.

How can you not find filter coffee? There's only one currency, GB pounds sterling. There are 4 banks in Northern Ireland that can issue banknotes : bank of Ireland, Ulster Bank, Danske (used to be the Northern bank,) and the First TrustBank. In Scotland, the Royal Bank of Scotland, the Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale bank can issue banknotes. The most important issuing bank is the Bank Of England. But it's all sterling.

Where I am is England, where we and the Welsh in Wales, use the Pound Sterling, up North you can find Scotland, the home to the Scots, who use there own money called the Pound Sterling, on Notes that look entirely different because they are! Across the Irish Sea, you can find Northern Ireland where they use their own money called the Pound Sterling, which are all part of a larger collective called the United Kingdom! As an Englishman just here for the banter, you do realise that Hawaii still uses the Pound Sterling? Why do you think the Union Jack is still on the Hawaiian Flag?

If you were working in retail and handling cash you should have been told about potentially getting Scottish or Northern Irish bank notes i payment. If they have the word sterling on them you can take them.

To be fair, the issue with the notes being questioned isn't a US > UK thing. If you're scottish (as I am) and you try to use a Scottish note in England, you WILL at some point have to explain to someone that yes, it is really money. Most places are fine but you'll always come across someone who's new to the job (or the country!) who has to check with the manager. Some people get very worked up over it, but it's entirely understandable that people aren't going to just take money that looks totally different to all the other money they've been handed for weeks or months before. But like every other comment has said, it's just different notes, not different currency. Other banks can print their own Pound Sterling notes. in scotland there are 3 banks who can print money - Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland, and Clydesdale Bank. RBS are the ones I see much most often. There are also 3 in Northern Ireland who print notes.

There’s only one currency, Stirling, there are however multiple issuing banks of those currencies. E.g. Bank of England for England & Wales. Three banks in Scotland & three in Northern Ireland. Simples.

The currency is Sterling. In England, only the Bank of England can issue banknotes. In Scotland, there are a few banks allowed to issue banknotes and they all have individual designs. Whilst Scottish banknotes are usually accepted in England, they are not actually legal tender in England and can be refused. In Scotland, Bank of England banknotes can be refused also, but they rarely are. Northern Ireland also has a few banks that issue banknotes, but they are not usually accepted in England or Scotland. Wales does not have its own banknotes. The Isle of Man also issues its own notes, as does the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, none of those notes are accepted on the mainland. It's easier in America :-)

Lack of variety ? When I lived in the US, twice, why do I need to search for cereal amongst 500 fat laden varieties. Read the label. Calories equal weight. Multiple currencies in the UK ? What are you taking ?

I have a Harry Potter related one. When they fly to headquarters and show Harry the note with the address on it Number 12 Grimmauld place, it is said later in the book that the houses next to n# 12 are 11 and 13. In Australia that would never be the case. We have adopted an odd/even system where all odd numbers are on one side and all even the other. So, in Australia the houses on either side would be 10 and 14. Is that numbering typical in England or was it something just done by the author for the book?

Egg nog is NOT something we consume in the U.K. coffee is heaps better than in the US..I.e. coffee shops. In the US it seems Starbucks is the only one…yuck. The expression “you alright “ is very much a class dividing expression!!

Algerian Coffee Stores in Soho in London sell beans and ground coffee in wide varieties. They will post/courier your order to you if you live outside London. They're the best coffee shop I've ever come across.

I found, when I visited the States, I had access to a thousand varieties of sugar and carcinogenic preservatives. Not sure if that is a good thing.

In the UK, when we think of eggnog, we think of Warniks "Advocaat" which is made in The Netherlands, and almost always bought as a Christmas treat! It is of course available all year round in the UK.

There is only one currency in the UK, and that is the Pound Sterling (£). Scottish and Northern Irish banks are allowed to print their own designs of banknotes, but to do so they must first pay The Bank of England in a special scheme that is too complicated to easily explain. I live in northern England, just a few miles south of the Scottish Border, and all Scottish banknotes are readily accepted. Further south, they may not be accepted, but any bank branch will readily exchange them on 1-1 basis at no cost. Northern Irish banknotes are much more problematic, and on the mainland should be exchanged in a bank for "English" pounds. Incidentally, Gibraltar, an Overseas British Territory, also prints its own Sterling Pound design banknotes. If these banknotes are to be used in in the UK the same rules apply - SIMPLES!
