This ship should be restored to its original splendor. At least it's still extant but it's condition is a national embarrassment.

Had to be so well-engineered that the weight could be unbalanced and not affect the structure's integrity.

The removal of the second set of tracks and supporting trestle structure must have been a huge undertaking and why was this done and what year was the removal completed. I remember the double track span and it must have been some very valuable "scrap" material........... considering the removal effort.

Line opened for traffic on March 1, 1911. Introduction of Centralized Traffic Control in early 1960's prompted removal of many stretches of double track. 10 miles double, 10 miles single, as a rule. Until this time the Southern Ry.'s main line from Washington to Atlanta was double tracked. throbbingunits.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2375937

Used to be double track. Do not know why the majority of the railroads in this country have made it so difficult to move freight and passengers.
