My old mare (35) has had so many vet visits, blood work, teeth work. She can not chew hay and even after a $300 teeth floating visit still drops grass. She runs on 25 acres of lush grass. I soak her feed (Triple Crown Senior) and some oats because she refuses to eat the senior feed without it. I have to manually give her a wet mash of weight builder powder, vitamins and arthritis supplement because she's so picky she refuses anything at all good for her. She hates calf manna, rice bran, any of that. I separate her from her Arabian pasture mate gelding (29 and fat) twice a day with plenty of soaked feed and I come back and she has sometimes eaten it all, or half or hardly any. The only thing she wants to eat is carrots and peppermints and I go over there in midday and give her plenty of those. I don't know what to do ive tried everything the vet has suggested but she's so skinny. I've even tried soaking hay replacer pellets, beet pulp, alfalfa cubes, alfalfa pellets. She refuses it 😢

I lost our 35 yr old mare last year to a colic. She was doing well on wet mash meals 4x a day but I think she kept trying to chew some grass and hay without enough molars, and she got blocked up. That’s my guess. Maybe something else was wrong. Our vet saved her from one bad colic only to give her the last act of kindness when a second worse one happened a month later.

I live that you're bringing this up and also including the liver as a major part of a horses overall wellbeing and immune health. Thank you! If you see good results from the peppermint tea, can you keep them on it? Is it safe to put it in their food x
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt Жыл бұрын
Hi Emma, it is safe for the horse to keep them on it. However, like any herbal product, it is best to keep horses on the product for 30 days on, then 30 days off. This prevents the body from acclimating to the herb and it becoming less effective. Also, peppermint tea can "test", so if you're going to a show the horse needs to be off the peppermint 5 days at a minimum for it to clear out. Thanks for watching!

Can bone scans give false positives? I.e if there is inflammation somewhere, can it potentially look like a joint? My horse was diagnosed with facet joint arthritis in 1 joint but he feels so great I just find it difficult to believe? The bone scan also showed up dark on his left hind splint bone but it was fully healed. I’m just a bit confused.
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. I hope I can explain this well. It doesn't give "false positives", per se. It always lights up with inflammation. BUT most people assume is that the inflammation bone/joint related. There's lots of other parts that can contain inflammation. Such as muscle, tendon, ligament, even fascia, etc. We like to have two (or more) different diagnostics to make a decision. For example, if your horse was xrayed and you found the facet joint arthritis AND the bone scan lit up in that area, that's a reasonable diagnosis of where the problem is. But if the xray showed arthritis, but no inflammation on the bone scan, it's possible that your horse has some arthritis yet it's not bothering him. On the splint bone, the bone itself can be healed, yet the ligament in between the splint and cannon bone could still be inflamed. I hope all this made sense. :)
@thisirishcobcan
@thisirishcobcan 2 жыл бұрын
@@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt thank you so much! The facet joints weren’t xray’d as apparently it’s too deep to X-ray in his back. He does have slight kissing spines directly above the area. I did ask if the ultrasound he had to have the area medicated showed the facet to be arthritic but I got a hesitant response. My horse injured himself in the field in January and I just wonder whether he did some tendon/ligament damage in his back, rather than arthritis. Thank you so much for explaining! I think I need to continue monitoring my horse for back pain (he’s fine at moment), continue core strengthening and lightly hack until the new year - then see how things develop. I just find it so odd that he has facet joint arthritis in 1 spot only, along his back. Part of me feels it could potentially be residual tissue damage from whatever he did in January.

What can I do for 17 yr old horse with ringbone other than what you mentioned for arthritis ? My vet said it's degeneration and can't be reversed ?
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Karin, Ringbone is more difficult, as the reasons for it are usually more complex. It still occurs because of excess load. But the question is "why is there excess load?" It can be leg misalignment, but it could also be foot angle issues. There could also be heavy metals or excess growth involved. I have fixed horses with ringbone. What happens is that the first goal is to correct the underlying problems to get the joint moving. Once it will move again, then very slowly the horse will start removing some ringbone. Hopefully you have a TBT practitioner near you (www.wheredoesmyhorsehurt.com/practitioners) who can help. Good luck!

Hi would kissing spine be the underlying issue? My mare keeps coming up lame, massage, PEMF, acupuncture and adjustments haven’t helped. After hock injections and 3 tubes of Equioxx she was going fantastic for about 2.5 months. I think her SI joint is inflamed. We took rads of her back and see she can be a candidate for kissing spine. Vet wants to try injections in her spine in the acupuncture areas but would you just go straight to SI joint or back injections?
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Sorry to hear about your horse's difficulties. Yes, kissing spine can be an underlying issue. Do you know if your chiro did the pelvic symphysis? That's often the primary underlying culprit. Injections in any of the areas you mentioned could be temporarily helpful, but the key is to find the primary cause. Best of luck!

I came across a study of 84 horses and I think it was only 16% were able to go back to full performance work, majority were able to go back to a lighter work, and a few percentage were done working completely. My mare has had, what I believe u would consider to be the top of the box adjusted by a chiropractor, that didn't help and then my vet did 4 injections to the sacroiliac joints. She dramatically changed, but still isn't quite right after 2 months. I'm working on getting back to over to my vet. I am continuing to look for answers. After reading that article I am thinking she might not get 100% from this.

I have a question. What can be the reason that horse is bucking or kicking during the jump over the fence? My horse do it with right or the left leg. Not before/after the jump, but during the jump in the air.
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt 5 жыл бұрын
Most commonly that is a sacroiliac issue. In people, the discomfort associated with sacroiliac issue's is called sciatica. The sacroiliacs (right and left) have to go through their entire range of motion over a fence. As opposed to riding on the flat, when only a partial range of motion is needed. Of course there are other possibilities, and compensations happening in the body as well. But if you can get the sacroiliacs moving well, the kicking issue should go away. Good luck! :)

@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt
@WhereDoesMyHorseHurt 5 жыл бұрын
@@66mindgame It is possible that the horse enjoys jumping, if the horse kicks out only occasionally. Other signs of discomfort would be ears back, tail wringing, or bucking. Always lots of reasons. You may want to look at the suspension bridge wiggle video to see if your horse's range of motion for the back is normal.
