i had an msdn copy of xp pro x64 that's been laying around for the last 20 years. i just recently installed it on an old p5q-em with a q9650, 8 gigs of ram, with a radeon hd7850. just for the heck of it. just for curiosity's sake. just to play far cry on xp x64 with the official x64 patch.

All Windows 95 could reboot in Dos Mode, I can't remember exactly but I think the trick was to press Shift + Click on the shutdown button, something like that.

This is a classic machine! My school had a few beige PIII models running Win98 in in our chemistry class. A wonderful machine! I recently picked the beige NetVista M41 with a P4. Once I get it recapped, I plan on installing Win98SE.

Seeing these BTX Dell PCs brought back good memories when I had the Dell XPS 410 and the Dimension E521. The XPS 410 was great for PC gaming in the late 2000s. I spent hours playing: Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Bioshock, Fallout 3 and other titles. The E521 I had came with Vista which ruined my experience on an otherwise good machine. I ended up sending it back and got a refurbished XPS 410 with Windows XP Media Center Edition which turned out to be a great machine I kept until 2015 when the mobo died due to leaking capacitors.

You made a mistake on your dvd, you named it Mint 23.1 which hasn't been released yet. I love that Mint runs on older machines! Thank U for this video.

I used to have on of these but mine had an Athlon 64 CPU. Very nice machine but I sold mine after a short while for a Dell XPS Core 2 Duo which was also a very good machine. I miss the good old days of the wild west tech in the 2000s.

Don't let the store management catch you playing video games on it, lol! 🤣Seriously though, awesome job saving this fine piece of equipment. A lot of companies went with Linux for their POS. When I worked at Lowe's, they had an variant of openSUSE and even used CentOS at one point. From what I have heard from management, Linux seemed to be more reliable than Windows.

My Inspiron 530 served two old ladies who have since passed away, and my granddaughter for home study during COVID. It is now a jukebox in my basement workroom. It currently has an E8400, 8 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD, Nvidia GTX950, 500 watt PSU, and USB wifi dongle. I run Spiral Linux LXQt no problem.

Linux is a rabbit hole. It does not always install correctly on every machine. The Windows installer, Media Creation Tool, just works. Say what you will about Microsoft and its need for control, but at least its products work. I tried four times to install Linux on an older laptop and each one failed. You go to the forums and there is no end to the reasons given for it. I whipped up a USB for another device on my desktop and had no trouble installing Windows where Linux could not.

Going through older videos as I recently found your channel which I am greatly enjoying the content! One thing I tend to do with older machines (well any machine these days to be honest) with running Windows XP or above, is use Snappy Driver Installer Origin for the drivers. It saves quite a bit of time trying to locate and/or guess which drivers you need. I tend to only install the graphics and sound drivers separately.

Great video! Keep it going! I think that MoBo has a M.2 slot under the HDD caddy. Please check it up! You can dual boot, but I recommend to use 2 drives, first Windows then Mint. You don't need to disconnect Windows drive. Mint will recognize it. Good luck!

This was the first POS that I supported. It launched a group of several great paying gig jobs. PAR Tech was a DOD contractor but the owner had friends who owned McDonald's restaurants. They were still using calculator type registers with pictures of food on them. PAR was able to set them up with an amazing POS. Other McD owners wanted them too. So PAR was manufacturing and supporting McDs for some time. By the time I got there McD kicked PAR to the curb and I was supporting Subway. Later I was supporting Quiznos in downtown Denver. That job lasted exactly 30 days and Quiznos went bankrupt. PAR Tech support was in North Boulder CO.

Soooooo, you was born in 2016? LOL! Strange to see a special port for a cash drawer, because is could be combined with USB or serial. A cash drawer only needs one signal: OPEN. Some cash printers (the Epson TM series e.g.) even have a cash drawer connection, so that after printing the receipt, a signal for opening the cash drawer can be given. But, when not having a printer, a separate connector is usefull. You mentioned that hand scanners cpuld be connected to the 12V or even 24V connectors. Even in 2016 there were handscanners on USB. (old ones used serial).

Nice video. I did get the Win 2000 CD in 2001 or so from a colleague and I installed it on my laptop and used it till XP was released. I still have it in a Virtualbox VM and it runs with 2 cores, 384 MB memory and 10 GB vdi-disk. I installed MS-Office 2003. It also has Windows Media Player 9.0, the visual aspects are different from WMP-10/11, but it had all functions of the later XP versions.
@TheRetroRecall5 күн бұрын
Nice! Do you have any genuine hardware to test it out on?
@bertnijhof54135 күн бұрын
@@TheRetroRecall I have a 486DX66 and a Philips P3105, a XT clone, but both are in a cupboard. I have no desk space for it. Last time I tried them out was 10 years ago. I also had a 2003 Pentium 4 HT, but I used that for 1 hour per week as Backup Server with FreeBSD. A few month ago the motherboard died after 21 years of service. After 1969 I worked 4 years in prototype test of main frames. Afterwards I moved to OS and application software development during 40 years. So I'm more interested in the OSes, like Linux and Windows and less in the hardware. So Virtualbox is ideal for me, since it has some decent emulation of older hardware from the time of e.g Windows 1.04 or 3.1.

The 3rd laptop in this video is very similar to the Toshiba L505 I used. (It had the worst battery life of any laptop I have ever seen. Only 2 HOURS in total. TWO.) It doesn't work anymore. (Because I broke it), but I'm hoping to salvage the thing if I can get to someone who is willing to fix it.

Good Explanation. I used Windows NT 4.0 at work. Now it is part of my Windows collection of Virtualbox VMs. I have Win NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6 installed with 128MB of RAM and a 2GB HDD. I've installed MS-Office 95, Internet Explorer 6.0 and Firefox 2.0, but it only supports the oldnet. NT only uses 15% of the RAM, so I will reduce it to 48 GB.

That weird card reader on the side is also a fingerprint scanner, I think. Since you're in Canada too, you'll be interested to know that Dollarama recently switched to using them for their self checkout machines, so cashiers can do a sort of 2FA with their pin as well (presumably for security)
