We lived on Hahn from 62 to 65. We brought over our large Dodge station wagon and drove through Germany, Italy and Switzerland. We got more crowds around that Dodge to look at it.

I too was proudly assigned to the 38th Tactical Missile Wing at Wueschheim Air Station, W. Germany from Oct '86 (shortly after the wing achieved Initial Operational Capability) to Oct '89 (not long after the wing hosted the first-ever Soviet Inspection Team visit as part of the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty of 1987. I was the 38th TMW's Wing Historian, but having been an 81150 USAF Security Policeman (Security Specialist/Airbase Ground Defender) by trade prior to have been recruited into the USAF History Program, the 38th TMW Exercise Evaluation Team tasked me to assist them in brainstorming hostile aggressor scenarios, in playing an 'aggressor' for responding teams, and in helping train our base's INF Treaty compliance officers. It was very interesting duty and I was proud to be assigned one of the Air Forces six GLCM wings. Sadly, while we dismantled the Gryphons and abandoned our GAMAs and bases, all these years later, I consider it ironic that Intermediate Ranged nukes from our old adversary are still an issue, after Putin's having broken that INF treaty with multiple violations over many years.

Wow, this takes me back! My Dad was stationed at Hahn from 1985-1988, and we lived in the nearby town of Bärenbach, about 1/2 mile from the front gate. I attended Hahn Elementary for 2nd and 3rd grade. I remember that building with the glass hallway overlooking the playground! I walked through that glass tunnel every day, and thought it was so futuristic. And I spent many happy hours in the adjacent library building (just right of the glass tunnel), where they held the annual Scholastic book fair. There was a very steep staircase on the opposite side of the playground which descended to the basement of the other building. I used to be really scared of it, and then I had to retrieve a ball kicked into that shadowy abyss. It was extremely claustrophobic at the bottom, and looking back up it seemed like a hundred steps to reach the narrow sliver of sky at the top. Needless to say, I never ventured down there again! :-D We had such good times at Hahn back in the 80's, despite the miserable rain and snow, which I grew to love! In the winter, we would walk down the farmer's access road to a steep hill above the road to Sohren, and sled down the slope on giant inner tubes that my Dad got from Vehicle Maintenance. We also had one of those plastic snow discs. Man, I wish I could return to those days... We had moved to Carswell AFB, Texas in early 1988, months before this video was filmed, but thank you so much for posting this for military brats like me, and USAFE veterans who served in that wonderful country of Germany! :-)

My wife and I lived in Leideneck. Loved Germany. There was a hobby shop in Sohren we went to. There was a young girl there who spoke great English. I thought she was American. She said, “no, I’m German but I learned to speak English without an accent”. I greatly respected this. I wish I could have learned more German. It was so easy speaking English there because most Germans I met wanted to use their English with me. Most Germans spoke better English than most Americans. Hope to go back soon.
