Brings back a lot of memories watching them at RAF Coltishall in the late 60s & 70s. At one of the Battle of Britain air shows there, they did a scramble of 16 Lightnings and the incredible sound of all of them flying over in diamond formation. Incredible!

In the summer of 1980 I sat near the end of the runway at RAF Coltishall and watched a Lightning take off - it was a sunny day but otherwise the experience was the same - watching that stunning rotation just after leaving the ground and climbing like a rocket straight up towards the heavens. It was a staggering and unforgettable sight.

Used to see the Lightnings going over as a kid. Best aircraft ever. Also once, a Vulcan flew over very low. Scared me horribly, I thought at first it was like a huge flying dinosaur (yeah, had an excessive imagination)😂

Awesome bit of kit. The Lightning, Vulcan, Hunter, Harrier and cancelled TSR 2. When Britain invested in talent and was still a country to be proud of.

The Lightning was to jets what the Spitfire was to props ! Both were home defence air superiority fighters that in their given role were almost unmatched ? To defend home soil from an invasion force. Both achieved this perfectly!

No doubt Deputy Chief Test Pilot Tim "Mr Lightning" Ferguson at the controls. My dad (also RAF fast jet pilot) worked on the Canberra programme at EE Warton back in the early 50's (1952 at least as there is a picture of my dad in RAF uniform at the English Electric stand in Preston Town Hall during the Guld celebrations). Tim famously landed a SEPECAT Jaguar on the M55 motorway just before it was opened to the public in April 1975. Sadly both my dad and Tim passed on before their time. Used to cycle down to BAC Warton airfield frequently to watch Jags, Lightnings, MRCA, Buccaneer and the occasional exotic US offerings. Happy days.

In 1980, I attended summer camp at RAF Binbrook as an Air Training Corps cadet, and the memory of the Lightening's close up and watching them take off is still etch in my mind (especially at night and the light show of the afterburners), truly wonderful days

In the days when Great Britain could😞 TSR would have been a World Beater but the Government of the time crushed that. Story of our country TBH. For a few more quid we could've had the lot, that includes HS2. In my eyes, if you're popping round to see The Queen you may as well walk a few more steps and visit The Queen Mother.

My late older brother had a couple of years at Binbrook near the end if his career. He was in the Stats and Records Dept. He saw Lightnings taking off almost every day and entered the details of intercepts and other stuff in the official records. He had also served many years at High Wycombe. I know that he would have enjoyed this clip.

Remind me what McMillan's government did to protect it? Failed to replace V fleet, chaotic weapons decisions leaving the TSR2 without anything to fight with. Throw in Mountbatten hell bent on queering the pitch with the Buccaneer, which tanked our sales with the Commonwealth, particularly Australia then maybe Wilsons goverment could have done better but talk about being given a hospital pass. If you are going to be political, at least try and be fair.

I lived and went to school within 10 miles of RAF Binbrook between 1974 and 1988. A good chunk of the kids in secondary school were either from Binbrook - almost all of them RAF - and/or with dads serving at RAF Waddington and Scampton (on the Vulcan). I've many fond memories of the Lightning, including the stench of hot jet fuel at the end of the runway at Binbook where I used to cycle with my best friend - from the base - to lie in the grass, look up at the sky and watch Lightnings take off and land. A vivid memory is that of a schoolfriend who lost his dad to a Lightning crash over the sea. It wasn't the only crash and nor the only death. At that time, over the space of 5 years or so, Lightnings from 5 and 11 squadron seemed to be dropping like flies - mainly along the North Sea coast at various points - as well as one in RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus where they got posted regularly from time to time. They seemed to be having a lot of failures just before they were taken out of service and replaced with the Tornado. These very visible failures even happened at airshows. In one of the last airshows, at Binbrook itself on an open day at the base, the squadron flew 9 Lightnings in a diamond as part of a short aerobatic display. On landing one of them failed to deploy its tail chute and really had to light the burners to clear the end of the runway safely before coming around the circuit again and landing safely. Which was actually more exciting to watch than the display itself! 😀 Few aircraft made my ears ring more than a Lightning doing a display at nearby Market Rasen racecourse when I was at school. Simply awesome to watch, hear and feel (via my internal organs shaking from the noise!!!). Just awesome. But at that point more than a little dangerous. It was a hugely entertaining aircraft to watch. To see it thunder along the runway, hold its altitude low why building up speed and then rotate skywards to fly vertically up through the clouds somehow never grew stale. The Phantom - also a regular low-level visitor to Lincolnshire - seemed far more cultured (though loud and incredibly big on the ground). The Lightning was uncultured and raw - more primitive and vastly more flawed. But what an aircraft. It used to make me giggle! 😀

@appstratum9747 I love what you've written here except for the heartbreak of your poor young friend losing his dad. You have great memories of the Lightning. What a wonderful time to be a boy. I knew two experienced RAF fast jet instructors who had flown the Lightning. They said is was like being strapped to a rocket. It scared the pants off them but it was great fun to fly. I think they summed up that amazing aircraft perfectly. I never got to see it fly except on KZbin but I was often able to examine one at close quarters. It was on display at the airbase where I worked.
