If Woody believes life has no meaning, why does he continue on? Hypocritical imo

as Nietszche said: 'art is the true task of life'. Within art there is beauty and that is for me the meaning of life; a child playing and laughing, a wave, a pretty woman, a cat licking his dog buddy, some classical music in a rainy morning while your hand holds a cup of smokey coffee...until our last day on this planet we have the obligation to look at every thing beautiful and enjoy it

Nah, people don't need to figure out a way to live - it's built into our genes and beings. It's hard and painful to die, and so we avoid it, and we fetishize our obsession about why we sit around in our bodies and try to build up rationizations as to why we do anything - it is in our bones. All civilization is either fetish or violence/war.

Interesting way of answering, similar to many other people, saying plenty of words without actually answering anything definite much less anything conclusive

At the very least, Woody Allen is fortunate to do work he loves. For 98% of people, work is just about earning a paycheck. Wage slavery forces us to ask why we even bother to continue. Typically, those who keep going with more energy are the ones who have suppressed any deeper self-awareness.

The flushing of everyone is accurate, Woody, but it doesn't happen every 100 years. It happens every second of every day. We get picked off one by an agonizing time.

I’ve been asking myself that very question for years. Why SHOULD we go on with our daily lives even though it’s all meaningless? For a minute there I thought Woody had the answer.

I don't know the meaning of life but the purpose of life is to share the experience with someone you love(and its a big plus if that person loves you back) and also to come up with at least one original thought.

Every living organisms has the will to survive and propagate. Every weed wants to cover the earth. That weed just reproduces and will choke out anything . The rabbit arrives just in time. Rabbits will cover the earth. The wolf arrives . It goes on until equilibrium is achieved. The invaders.

“What if the worst is true? What if there's no God, and you only go around once, and that's it? Don't you want to be a part of the experience? You know, what the hell? It's not all a drag, and I'm thinking to myself: Geez! I should stop ruining my life searching for answers I'm never gonna get and just enjoy it while it lasts. And, you know, after--who knows? Maybe there is something, nobody really knows. I know that maybe is a very slim reed to hang your whole life on, but that's the best we have.” ― Woody Allen, Hannah and Her Sisters

Not too strong an argument. First, there were many superior minds who thought that there was a "higher sense" to it, not just a materialist nihilism- Goethe, Hegel, Plato, Whitman, Dostoevsky, Jung....to name a few. Woody is highly selective in his world-view, one-dimensional. Then, even in the case of "ultimate meaninglessness" - a healthy mind doesn't worry, because it is beyond our imagination what will be in the next million or billion years. We care about the continuity of our worries & our cultures, and these cultures last, hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. This is how our human minds perceive "what matters". And developed minds- for instance Aristotle, Leonardo, Marx (although he was wrong in his utopianism), Brahms, Einstein, Joyce... were aware that pseudo-questions stem from the lack of energy of an individual, or the exhaustion of a civilization. Optimistic, expansionist civilization & people in it don't care about some "ultimate meaning". They enjoy the energy of life's flow & energetically flow with it, not giving a damn where it flows to.

Profound and sadly true. His films are one of many great distractions from the truth. Watch “Hannah and Her Sisters” to see how he expands on this issue in one of his best films. 🎬❤️🎬

Seems like the point is in energy that we give out to those who feed off it. This is a big farm and we are the stock. Farmers remain unknown to us, common people. Game is rigged.

What I don't get about Woody is that Judeo-Christian values are at the heart of the best of his work: kindness, forgiveness, redemption, atonement of sins: he is, in a goofy sort of way, a religious filmmaker. And if If he truly believed what he's saying he wouldn't do anything - what would be the point? I truly believe that through his work he is an instrument of God's loving grace and is proof of the existence of God because he chose Woody. Oh the irony! I just wish the great man had the humility to recognize that but if there is one thing atheists lack it's that🎉

I totally agree with Woody's assessment and have thought that way since my teens. For me, the only really useful thing to do with your life is to spend it trying to help and entertain your fellow beings get through it all. Woody has always managed to help me pass some time by capturing my attention for a short while. So have a lot of other people. Friends who spend time with me help. Musicians and artists who make you think and entertain you. Interactions with strangers are chances to make them feel better. We can all help each other through whatever this experience is if we try.

I'm glad you have your own ideas! I guess the answer to why is that I always appreciate it when my friends, neighbors and strangers are kind and polite to me. It makes me happy and I prefer to be happy if possible (though it's a hard state to maintain). Their efforts make me want to do the same for others. I realize that the world is a hard place and if I can make it a little more bearable for someone else with a tiny bit of effort, why not? I would be happy to hear your ideas if you would like to share them.

Huge Woody Allen fan, who grew up with a Jewish-Italian mom - double whammy- along with a healthy (unhealthy?) dose of personal existential dread. So what makes life worth living? Love. The Beatles got it right. The love you take is equal to the love you make.

It’s a pretty grim description of life without meaning and devoid of God. My challenge is if there was a guy who predicted that he would die and raise again and then did it. That would be a game changer in terms of the meaningless of life.
