@@seanosborne4028 For hiking or anything strenuous I would suggest a shell with pit zips to vent heat (North Face I've found good) and if you are planning to move in the rain then a folding peak cap and a lightweight ripstop poncho - Amazon, get one without the neck zip they always leak onto your chest - would be stuff I consider indispensable. I have 18 months experience outdoor living and moving at many different temperatures. If you do get a poncho then you may not need a jacket with pit zips but at minimum I'd get one with vent holes under the armpits - you really don't want to be opening the jacket exposing the neck and chest which I've found people tend to do if their jacket doesn't have pit venting; zips are best, vent holes are acceptable. Make sure the poncho can securely close at the sides; if it can't then you need to sew some cords at each quarter-length along the sides so that you can tie the thing closed in wind. To clarify; you need to wear a waterproof shell under the poncho to be safe and it needs to have pit venting capability to avoid getting too sweaty. PS thank you for your questions/input - makes me think of new video ideas eg one on my stormproof DIY poncho.

Wanted to get a Karrimor Weathertite 3 in 1 as my winter jacket (0-10 degC) Looked for reviews but couldn't find any, so I stumbled across this After going throught the video and comments I suppose the 3 in 1 should be suffice? Worst case I'll just have another thermal base
@mpireoutdoors5274
@mpireoutdoors5274 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say it will serve you well for a number of reasons including; 1 lower breathability than gore Tex - so you won't lose too much humidity which can be an issue in winter. Less breathability also means wind cannot drive as much cold water vapor through the jacket. 2 ability to switch the liner to a puffer liner - I think karrimor have puffer liners with the required mating zips and if not then you just use a puffer loose under the shell. 3 ruggedness - it might be not be the most high tech jacket as it misses pit zips etc but it's durable. 4 somewhat formal appearance - especially if you get a matching permanent marker and colour the branding to match the rest of the jacket. 5 price:performance ratio - hard to beat as it offers good construction and looks at a fair price. For anything similar to light/medium walking it will do you well. For anything more strenuous you may want gore Tex depending on how much you sweat. Regarding thermal base: Merino wool doesn't move well underneath the fleece liners so I would suggest to upgrade the liner rather than the base as most base materials will move acceptably well under the polyester/nylon fabric of a puffer jacker, in general I've found puffer jackets to be about twice as thermally efficient as fleece for the size and weight and I don't really use fleece these days instead opting for a similar size garment with polyester or down insulation. Fleece however I guess still have some place perhaps due to ruggedness and cost (and maybe comfort) but I haven't seemed to want anything fleece for a long time as I want things which are highly efficient for their weight and pack size.

@mpireoutdoors5274 Жыл бұрын
@@ashrodders you have to check the input/output voltages. I don't know if this produces enough watts to charge a laptop - most laptops are over 45 watts. So you'd need to find a power bank (battery) which can take the low input voltage (5 volts +-26 watts) and output it to the laptop. I think a tablet which charges via USB might be a better option. But I don't know if you can - it could be possible. Are you planning to travel by foot, car, bicycle, motorcycle? Edit1: I've seen a few powerbanks which are designed with an AC outlet to power laptops. I don't know if they have an option for a USB input. Normal solar panels use an MC5 or MC4 power jack - you might want to get a normal solar panel with that connection which would give you more options in regards to which power banks you can input the power to. But have a look, if you find a laptop power bank with a 5 volt USB input let me know.

@@ashrodders I have some experience with a generation 1 night vision unit with an inbuilt infrared flashlight which runs off a CR123 battery and sits on a head mount - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this for movement in open field at night. Gen 1 means about 15 times light amplification which means as long as there's a quarter moon and your eyes are adjusted it let's you see pretty well in field. However, for a general use long term option I would suggest Gen 2 minimum because it has an extended tubelife, better light amplification and often have autogating etc. You can charge the CR123 with a small USB charger via a portable solar panel which basically gives you permanently powered night vision - a single charge lasts a few hundred hours of use and takes only about an hour to charge.

Hello Gen. Due to the lack of insulation I would not recomment these as first preference for snow. For snow you would want a full boot i.e. which covers the ankle to the base of the calf muscle and you want the boot to have a degree of insulation. A typical survivalist example is the Mickey Mouse Cold Weather Boot, which you can google for more info - I guess I should do a review some time. You may also, for a winter boot, consider a ski boot or a boot which has the rear lug allowing it to mount into skis. Additionally, as the boots were not waterproof for me, I cannot recommend them for anything involving wetness. For snow you typically want at least the bottom third of the boot to be entirely waterproof, paired with insulation and a breathable waterproof membrane throughout the rest of the boot to allow vapor to escape.

If you want a super budget option just to have a go then you can use a Wellington boot - make sure it has a suitably grippy sole or crampon addon - a few sizes too large with 2 pairs of thick winter socks, although this I wouldn't recommend for anything more than messing around in a snowy city park or something like that.

The jacket is high strength and high-quality construction. Everything works correctly - zips, pockets, hood. It is also good rain protection. However I would not recommend to use for sport above 18 celcius because it is not super-breathable. For below 17 celcius it is good. It provides high protection against wind. If you will use it in cool/cold weather I suggest to buy a size bigger than usual to fit an insulation jacket underneath. The wrist closures will ensure the sleeves do not interfere with your hands.

$150 is more than enough to make a proper boot. Merrell skimping on material selection for the front quarter guard is pretty below par for their branding and the fact that they rectified the issue with the next updated version shows they agree. Part of the motivation for such a video is to assist people to cut through the marketing bullshit; noone markets their boot as "for light use, inferior front quarter guard material and adhesive selection". I took my next $150 to North Face and got the best toughest boots I've ever had - have a video on a small repair I made on it. I have to say the other materials in the Merrell boot were top notch especially the ridges of harder foam (I think foam) on both sides of the back third. Never scratched.

Bad grip on wet stone. The best grippy Vibram Megagrip sole, or the Treksta Hypergrip sole. Greetings from the Principality of Asturias (Spain)

I didn't have a problem with grip although I didn't try it on wet stone. Overall I would not recommend this boot at all without an upgraded front quarter guard - which I believe Merrell did do. Ultimately I find North Face boots to have a better construction.

For the money I would recommend a different brand. Had good luck with North Face so far and did a discussion video on them - kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4vGXqB9r5eWr6s&ab_channel=MpireOutdoors. Definitely check that the front toe-guard is high strength rubber on whatever you buy because for that price there's no reason it should be inferior material.

They look cheap. And now I can see they are made cheap too!

The materials are good except for the front quarter guard, which I believe they improved in the next version to a thick synthetic rubber - which is the correct material for that job.

Please watch full video. I would not recommend this version for wet weather, maybe the updated version is better but I haven't tried it yet - hopefully soon.

@@vlaerenko I explain in the video, my problem was where the front quarter guard joins as well as the upper-sole join where the shoe bends up around the first metatarsal. I would, for wet weather, recommend to you the North Face Hedgehog Mid GTX (not the fastpack one). But I'm not sure if they make it anymore. My basic feeling after using TNF boots for about 6 months is that they are better than Merrel - better construction methods, design and materials. I guess I need to put up a review of the North Face boots - I have a repair video of them (I added something) - in that video you can see the boots clearly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4vGXqB9r5eWr6s
