Just watched Watchmen Ultimate, which includes a cartoon version of the Tales of the Black Freighter, which is a sequence from the comic that I’d completely forgotten about. The question of its relevance to the Watchmen story springs up naturally, which is what brought me to your video. My quick take is that the captain of the sunken vessel, not unlike the Watchmen/Minutemen vigilantes, is initially motivated by noble intentions (to protect his family & his colonial town from the raiders), but as he fights through all the obstacles standing in his path, he ends up becoming the evil he set out to thwart, a fact which he recognizes by turning himself over to the raiders at the end of the story. In my view, Veigt most closely maps onto to the captain: he’s guided by noble intentions, but in successfully carrying out his plan of preventing nuclear war he himself commits countless atrocities. As an aside, I find it an amazing feat of storytelling that Moore was able to craft a character (Ozimandias) who serves both as Bond supervillain and as the savior of humanity (!!!)
