I agree on a lot of this, however, ANY ROI on a SS payment is MORE than he government is going to pay you. The bottom line is the money is making money that it won't make if your using it for living expense. That said, there are tax exempt and tax free annuity options as well, the only drawback is level of buy in and acceptable percentage rates. It is all math, most of it simple. However, this last few generations of retirees are woefully ignorant of money and how to save it properly or how to guard it. Which is why guys like you are so necessary.

The problem is that almost no one will save money from their paycheck over their lifetime. That is the difference between somebody like the government doing it for you. I filed at 65 and I have been very happy and now I am coming up on my 90th birthday.

Looking through the comments, I see why no recent politicians are seriously looking at a fix. Anything you do to resolve it, is going to anger 1/2 of the electorate. The same thing happened back in the 1980's last time it was going broke, we waited until the last minute to come up with a solution.
