Assalamualaikum, Allah says in Surah Luqman (interpretation of the meaning): “And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allah…” [Luqman 31:6] The scholar of the ummah, Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: this means singing . Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafsir al-Tabari, 21/40) Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this ayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 3/451) Al-Sa’di (may Allah have mercy on him) said: this includes all manner of haram speech, all idle talk and falsehood, and all nonsense that encourages kufr and disobedience; the words of those who say things to refute the truth and argue in support of falsehood to defeat the truth; and backbiting, slander, lies, insults and curses; the singing and musical instruments of the Shaytan; and musical instruments which are of no spiritual or worldly benefit. (Tafsir al-Sa’di, 6/150) Allah says in the Holy Qur'an "Fool/Mislead as many as you can with your voice” (Surah Al Isra, verse: 64) Mujahid (rahimahullah), who was known as a leader in Tafsir and was a student of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) explains ‘with your voice’ to mean music, musical instruments and all futility. (Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim, Surah Al Isra, verse: 64) Now one saheeh Al Bukhari that he heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection." Sahih Al Bukhari 5590 Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zina, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhari ta’liqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsul by al-Tabarani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Sahihah by al-Albani, 91) Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: This is a sahih hadith narrated by al-Bukhari in his Saheeh, where he quoted it as evidence and stated that it is mu’allaq and majzum. He said: Chapter on what was narrated concerning those who permit alcohol and call it by another name. This hadith indicates in two ways that musical instruments and enjoyment of listening to music are haram. The first is the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “[they] permit” which clearly indicates that the things mentioned, including musical instruments, are haram according to shari’ah, but those people will permit them. The second is the fact that musical instruments are mentioned alongside things which are definitely known to be haram, i.e., zina and alcohol: if they (musical instruments) were not haram, why would they be mentioned alongside these things? This is only a small portion of the saheeh evidence. Imam Bukhari is more knowledgeable than the great scholars mentioned in this video such as ibn hazim. He is far more knowledgeable in hadith as well. Don't get me wrong, Ibn Hazim is a great scholar too! but many imams reject some of his weak opinion. I can mention much more evidences and don't forget even the four Imams regard music as haram as well guys. Ask yourself honestly, Who is a better scholar when it comes tu such matter? Bukhari or Ibn Hazim? Imam Bukhari. Who is more knowledgeable in hadith? Ibn hazim or Bukhari? Bukhari again. Now Imam Bukhari says it is saheeh while ibn hazim says it is not that saheeh, which one? Imam bukhari of course because he is more knowledgeable when it comes to hadith. When you says it is ibn hazim, when it is agreed by the ummah that Imam Al Bukhari is way more knowledgeable in hadith, that means you have mixed up your decision with your feelings.. Come on guys.. Even the four imams agreed on this. Want to know what Imam shafiee says? In the book, Adabul Qada, Imam As-Shafi is reported as saying, “Verily, song is loathsome ; it resembles the false and vain thing (al-batil). The one who partakes of it frequently is an incompetent fool whose testimony is to be rejected.” His closest and most knowledgeable disciples clearly stipulate that his position on this issue is that of prohibition (tahreem) and they rebuke those who attribute its legality to him. This is confirmed by the later Shafi scholar, Ibn Hajar Al-Haythami. He related that one of the Ash-Shafi’s disciples, Al-Harith Al-Muhasibi (d. 243 H) said, “Song is haram, just as the carcass (maytah) is.” Furthermore, the statement that singing is haram is found in the treatise, Ash-Sharh Al-Kabeer, by the authoritative Shafi Scholar, Ar-Raafiee (d. 623 H). This is further corroborated by the accomplished Shafi jurisprudence, Imam An-Nawawi (d. 676 H) in his Rowdah). Such is the correct view of the dependable scholars of the Shafi madhab. The arabic word and what is meant by singing is one that is accompanied by musical instruments. But for sure, if the lyrics are bad, it remains impermissable although without without musical instruments.
