This performance perfectly captures the essence of James. It starts with a screw up, from which they not only recover but elevate their performance to such a peerless height. Getting away with it, all messed up. The building momentum and climax get me every time. Someone needs to upload a less muffle version of this.

I remember this gig well. First time I'd seen (or heard of) James. I can't remember what CARE stood for but the "E" was elephants. It was a cracking and eclectic line up on the day; Gil Scott-Heron, Buzzcocks, Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, John Cooper Clarke.

Thanks Dave, I was at the front at this gig and they played some of stutter that wasn't aired. It was a fantastic night. I hadn't ever seen a video of it.

Got this same performance on video hidden away somewhere - sincere THANKS for posting this .

It was an all day mini-festival for charity - "CARE concert" if I remember correctly, can't remember what the CARE stood for though. James were on last - think it was SHAM 69 who were up before them and they refused to go off so delayed things somewhat. Definitely 20 August 89.

I never remember James playing at the piece hall? Return club at the leisure centre yes but not the piece hall.

For one I only had to get out of bed and drive 3 miles to this one, great gig but still doesn't beat the legendary rooftop performance in Picadilly Gardens Manchester in '91, announced on the radio at 8AM, by noon the streets were brought to a standstill with James Fans, school attendance in Manchester that day was around 10% :)

Making allowances for the recording, I much prefer this live version.
