I'm 77 and have had two Weim's. The last girl left two summers ago but I intend to adopt a senior in 2027. As Xander said they are athletic and need a lot of exercise, especially when they're young. They are also very loving, I referred to mine as Velcro dogs and they shared my bed with me from the day I brought them 'til the day they passed. I will have another one someday, but I'll adopt an older dog hoping we will be together until we pass. I believe Smoke and Dusty will be waiting at Rainbow Bridge until we are together again.

I’ve had Weims for 26 years. I got my first Weim as a puppy, at 8 weeks and have been rescuing adult and senior Weims, ever since. These are the most wonderful dogs. They become so well-bonded with their owners, they are incredibly intelligent, and they are so affectionate. Our Weims sleep in our bed with us, they go on vacations with us, they go to restaurants and they just want to be with us. I lost my 2 seniors this year and still have a 6yr old.

I think one thing that should be mentioned is their prey drive. They were bred to be hunting dogs with many different characteristics, including a powerful chase instince. They are FAST! Their prey drive is intense, which makes them susceptible to chasing "critters" and smaller pets, such as cats. The weims I've had all have had a powerful drive to attack animals such as groundhogs, and frankly, kill them. Cats are the biggest concern. I've had weims since I was in high school, and that's all I've had since I graduated college, and I'm 61 now. All of the weims I've raised myself have been raised with cats, and are fine with them. However, the rescues I've had is hit or miss. Of the three rescues I've had, one was indifferent to the cat, and the cat was actually the boss. The other two? One would definitely eat my cat, and the other was hit or miss. If you have a cat, I think weims should be introduced to them at as young an age as possible. They can be trained at an older age, but their prey drive is super strong. Just like with everything else with weims, they are very trainable, but that prey drive instinct is so strong that for some, their instincts even override their training. Btw, I know what I'm doing in training weims because I've learned their characteristics so well. Also, mine have always been good around small children, but their high energy and desire to play can make them inadvertently knock a small child over just with their exuberance. This is not a criticism, but just a caution to anyone considering getting a weimaraner. Obviously, they're my dog of choice for life, and I don't regret having any of the ones I've had the privilege of being adopted by. They are the most amazing companion and friends ever!

Found this video little over a year ago now when I committed to my own Weim pup and was researching training tips. I incorporated much of what was said in this video, along with some other tips found on other videos. My Billy is 1.4 years old now and he has grown into a magnificent and loyal companion. He is still maturing and still working on impulse control (namely prey drive control) but by and large, he has turned out better than I expected. I believe the keys are, positive reinforcement training is important as they are very emotionally sensitive, socialization the moment you bring the pup home and incorporating both physical and mental exercises in their daily lives. Weimaraners are not for the novice or lazy, but you also don't need to be a triathlete to have one. But just be consistent with the training, get them outside everyday and challenge their minds and you will have a wonderful companion for the rest of their lives. They are beautiful to look at, garners a unbelievable amount of attention in public (best to be not a introvert because they can literally stop traffic and people will want to meet/touch them). Due to their intelligence, desire to please you and being extremely food motivated, training them will make you feel like a pro trainer. Just be prepared to have a 80lbs/90lbs dog follow you around everywhere you go, because they will stick to you like glue.

Was first looking at this breed but I happened to come across someone local with Vizsla pups, similar in so many ways. My Vizsla is 3 months now so learning curve focus on behaviour and toilet habits. I'm looking to get a Weimaraner too at some stage, let them burn energy chasing each other in the park and garden. I'm early retirement so I'm with my pup fulltime. Your video wasspot on, thank you.

She is a 32kg chocolate coloured ridgeback but ever pic of a wei I see is like spitting image but in grey and all the attributes you’ve listed here are 110% correct. I let her off lead at the beach and she will only go so far and never a step further no matter what. Where can I send you a photo of her and you tell me.

My sweet bodie is 6 years old now and he’s been our best decision as a family weimeraner safe a special kind of dog and I truly don’t know what we’d be without his kind of loving style he legit has a personality of his own like he knows when it’s time for movies and loves popcorn or cheese. He gets lots of running in our huge backyard so he is very loved and pampered since I or my sister don’t have any kids yet he’s the family grandchild

Why is your Weim running in an open field with such a long leash on? This is dangerous. If that leash snags on something or wraps around a foot while at speed, he could be injured. Are you bound by some uptight leash law even in that open area?

Your video just popped up on my feed. We have four (2 boys, 2 girls, a pup of each). Had them all my life and would never choose another breed. Does mean running first dawn and late in the day, but as you note, they're super calm when well exercised (mentally and physically). Three are at my feet writing this, and the other is watching the builders in our garden, just in case.

I don't run. I don't exercise. I am very much a couch potato. However, I take my Weim out at least 2 times a day. Forest preserves, off leash so she can run her ass off and chase wildlife. This is more than enough for her in addition to obedience training at home.

All three pointer breeds - Weim, GSP and Vizsla - are the best breeds ever. They have, as said, incredible energy and aren’t for everyone, but if they’re a fit for your family, you will never find a better breed. Just the best. In my experience it doesn’t take anywhere near several hours per day. A couple of thirty minute sessions is plenty for an adult weim. A tired pointer is a happy pointer.
@mendes4238 ай бұрын
I have one. If you have an open space for him to use all his energy, go for it. Otherwise I wouldn't suggest it. Lovely dog, inteligent but very needy and stubborn. Would really suggest to train him as a puppy as soon as possible.

Let me ask you this man. I have experience with Border Collies who have sadly passed. This time around I am thinking of going with a Weimeraner. Would the same principles apply from a BC to a Weimeraner? I live on eight acres of orchards and would bike my dogs on a path about a mile a day. I never used a firm approach with them but instead a reward based approach.
