My quibble with this film is that the director couldn’t resist having Henry visit Anne in prison, which he never did. The story was dramatic enough without it!

Please do 1961. I want to hear how you rank the performances in that year. Natalie W has a good case to be the best despite not winning the Oscar.

Really, she was right about these films that were offered to her and which she rejected. Where are they nowadays ? It's not like she had turned down "klute" or even "Portrait of a downfall child". These were the great ones for top prominent actresses of the time (albeit with various success at the outcome as "Portrait" was barely seen , considered a sort of artsy european film in spite of Dunaway 's presence). Aside from refusing to go to the oscars , which must have indeed infuriated her " team" and was indeed a mistake as one always has to play along in some capacity , whatever your walk of life is, she really didn't do anything wrong. It seems more like the real good projects weren't there , past her mixed success with "Diary" which, as the critics pointed out, was a half-baked affair ( even if she herself emerged relatively unscathed). We've seen more successful debut (and some of them leading to not much either) throughout the history of moviemaking.

Greatly enjoyed your meticulous and detailed review of the 1950 Best Actress Oscar race. My choice for Judy Holliday's best performance is The Marrying Kind (1952) - that's the one she should have won the Oscar for. She was too mannered and obvious in Born Yesterday. My 1-5 choices are Bette Davis, Gloria Swanson, Eleanor Parker, Judy Holliday and Anne Baxter.

These two performances are often cited for the argument against an Oscar race between artist being unfair to the artist. BothBette and Gloria’s performance. It’s unfair for such fine artists to be in a race for the best when more than one artist deserved to win.Judy holiday won and can you imagine how disappointed Gloria ad Bette were?

A great post but I think you’re somewhat unfair discussing Deborah Kerr’s superb performance in the underrated Edward, My Son. Her transformation from the naive, idealistic wife and mother to the embittered, elderly alcoholic is stunning. You decry her final scene but it’s incredibly poignant. Her delivery of ‘extraordinary’ is gut-wrenching and that final walk up the staircase is incredibly moving, as her voice fades out, just like her life. And re your criticism of the way she drinks - it was Tracy himself who showed her how an alcoholic really drinks. And her friend Katharine Hepburn visited the set, and commented ‘Deborah’s wiping Spence off the screen.’ I was fortunate enough to know Deborah who was truly beautiful, inside and out, a woman of great compassion, sensitivity and kindness, with a delicious sense of humour. John Kerr remarked that she ‘treated everyone with complete equanimity.’ And she refused to do any publicity campaigning for her nominations : ‘ if I can’t win one without begging, I don’t want one at all.’ Her greatest, most complex performance (in my opinion) didn’t even get nominated : The Innocents.

I'm 58 now - grew up watching old films with my Mom and always seemed to gravitate to comedic roles by women. I LOVED the Major and the Minor and The African Queen but was never a real fan of Davis or Hepburn or the other "great" females stars of that era. Of course, Ginger Rodgers was in a league of her own for many reasons. One day, about 10 years ago my husband begged me to watch Born Yesterday. I was knocked off my chair. I sat in AWE of her - every scene, her accent, how she walked, her brilliant comedic talent and timing........every move she made - I was amazed that I had never watched any film of hers or had even heard of her, that I could recall. I am sad for the short life she lived and for what she could have given the world. No disrespect to Crawford or Davis, Harlow, Hepburn, etc....but they have nothing on Billy Holiday. What a gem FOR THE AGES. I've watched this film 20 times and I will NEVER get tired of it. IF there is an after life - I want to come back as Billy (lol)

Thank you Fritz for an outstanding video which finally makes clear that Anne Bancroft was a deserved winner for The Miracle Worker and not a runner up or because backstage gossip and conniving paved the way for her to win. The story of Davis and Crawford is fun and sensational and Davis kept that fire burning well into old age as it made a delicious tale that entertained audiences for years. And it did - myself included. But it also severly distracted from the fact that Bancroft gave an outstanding performance that stood out and got her an Oscar - well deserved. Thank you for your informative video which finally repositions the spotlight on the right person. It was high time.

And to think they left out Jeanne Moreau for Jules and Jim! 1962 is a contender for best year for movies period. But actress lineup definitely. Would like to give a shout out to *1974* (Gena, Faye, Ellen, Diahann, Valerie), *1993* (Angela, Holly, Emma, Stockard, Debra), *1996* (Brenda, Emily, Diane, Kristin, Frances), and *2020* (Frances, Andra, Carey, Vanessa, Viola)
