Obviously yours is a US market car with injection and Citroen SM Transaxle. UK cars of similar year (Steven's S3, Turbo & N/A) has Renault UN1 Transaxle and Carbs. So procedure has some differences. I have just removed the powertrain on my '89 Turbo, I will probably post a video on it soon. I removed the Transaxle first, then moved the Engine back before lifting it out. My hoist's reach did not seem long enough and also I have limited space. It was not too awkward, I've taken the 'box out before but this is the first time I've taken out the Engine. I look forward to watching the next vids in this series. All the best.

Working on the V8 is unexpectedly easier.
@bluvoltКүн бұрын
Is a V8 really easier to work on than a 4-cylinder? I own an early Stevens as well, similar to this one, though my Turbo setup differs slightly. My boost control valve is positioned right after the exhaust manifold. I always thought the 4-cylinders were more straightforward to work on compared to the V8s. Awesome content! I’ll be waiting for the next episode.
@JetFire9Күн бұрын
@@bluvolt Yes, I had both and worked on them a lot. The 4 cyl is like a large community that never had any master planning and just grew over time, and the V8 is like a well planned master community that was planned out before they broke ground.

Great Video! You should do a video on the DHLA 45M variant, I'm really curious to see the design of the sealed fuel bowl. I also wonder how difficult it would be to convert a standard DHLA 45 to having a sealed bowl. Did the 45M have more progression holes drilled as well as being sealed? Or just the standard progression holes and being sealed? I look forward to more videos In the future!

Well presented, Thanks. Given the age of these cars, and the scarcity of parts, carefully confirm what you have on the motor for pullies before you time them. Early motors may have been converted to HTD, a prior owner may have already swapped the Aux pully out, dots could be re-painted with an assumed right color, and there are some aftermarket pullies out there.

I love this channel I just found it. I am about to start a restoration on a 1978 Esprit S2. The engine is open, and I need to adjust the valves and shims. How should I approach this? Is there also an Excel sheet available for the 907 engine?
@west-cam4 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for the comment! Yes, I'd be happy to send you the spreadsheet for valve shim setting. The process is tedious, but easy. However, it will likely require shim sizes you don't have on hand, so much of the time is waiting for the correct shim sizes to be delivered. Happy to help, just send a pm.

Cam, These videos are fantastic, I can’t thank you enough for carefully crawling around the workings with clear explanations. The issue that has been driving me bananas since the interior was redone are the low beams. The flash and pass on the stalk works well, triggering the steering wheel stalk; the pods raise and lights flash then go back down. Flipping the light switch does nothing with pods or headlights, it does activate the small parking/side lights, however if you flip the light switch on and flash with the stalk the pods stay up but no lights. Flipping the switch off the pods go down. The entire low beam circuit is not working Your video seven explains the wiring and the relays well. The redundancies are interesting. Where is the relay for the low beams?? I was told they are under the dash near the glove box. next to the blinker relays, I cannot seem to find it. Any help would be golden! Thank you, West Cam
@pellcio4 ай бұрын
Brilliant video! As a fellow 1970s Lotus (Elite) owner, I know all too well the foibles of their wiring. I have added a few relays for things like the fans, headlights and (now) headlight lift motors. However, the thought of redoing the wiring harness as you have makes my brain hurt. I DO like the idea of multi pin connectors for the instrument cluster and tail lights. If I don't run the car for a couple of months it's like the electricty forgets where to go or the wires are clogged up and certain things don't work untill I've driven it some miles. Anyway, I love your creativity, attention to detail and your clear explanations. Quite inspiring. I will soon be getting into rebuilding an HC 2.2L 910 motor for NA use, but first have some constuction projects to finish. Will be consulting your past videos for that process. Thanks.
@west-cam4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind comments! I'm familiar with the Elite.. well sortof.. I restored a 74 Eclat years ago.. honestly, all early lotus cars are pretty much wired using the same logic. I've often wondered why Lotus didn't separate the harness into smaller harnesses with connectors. IMO it would have made assembly easier and faster. I can only assume it was cost. Best of luck on the 910. It's a fun motor to build!
@pellcio5 ай бұрын
Thanks for this. You are about the only guy on YT who explains how to build these motors. I have a 1975 Elite which runs just ok. About 8 years ago I bought a Complete 910 motor off eBay. Upon tearing it down, the Nikasil liners are oval so new liners and HC pistons are in order. Unfortunately, I had a garage fire and many of the parts I had stored were destroyed, melted, and others, like the crank, sat in wet boxes for months all rusty. Once the shop is rebuilt, I plan to dig back into it. I may be contacting you for tips, if that's alright? Cheers!
@west-cam5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. These videos don't get a lot of views so they can be difficult to find on KZbin. I'm glad you stumbled upon them. Sorry to hear about the garage fire, that sucks! Hopefully It wasn't caused by the Lotus! Plese feel free to contact me anytime to talk - always happy to help keep another car on the road. Also, if you're looking for parts, let me know what you need. I have a garage full of NOS and reconditioned Lotus parts in my garage. I have a website at West-Cam.com which is active, but we're still working on bringing the store online. you can also find me on Instagram at westcamlotus. I went round the cooling system on my '89 S3 Esprit Turbo when I first bought the car (a long time back). After a lot messing around I bought an S4 Radiator which was deeper and more efficient then the original. I had to mod the housing to accomodate it. Esprit radiators come mounted in a steel frame that supports and isolates the radiator from flex of the housing. I also found some pin holes in the through chassis pipes where they meet the hoses. Corrosion seems to occur at these points, I suspect that any moisture collecting on the outside of the pipes and held in place by the hose ends is the cause, be it seepage of coolant or moisture from the environment which may contain salt. Hose clips, especially stainless steel clips possibly encourage the aluminium to corrode due to potential difference even though they are on the outside of the hose. All this was on a car which was, at that time 11 years old, had a full history and been driven daily.

I've just done a water pump change on my 89 Esprit with the engine in the car. I had my pump rebuilt and pressure tested by PNM Parts in the UK (as I'm in the UK), their turnaround was just a few days. I went this route because it's such a mare getting it out that I didn't mind spending the extra for their service with a test and a guarantee.

I've been changing the cambelt on my 89 Esprit only to find the water pump leaking from the weep hole so I've taken it all apart again and everything else to get the pump out. I'm now at the stage where I'm fitting the rebuilt pump and reassembling the stuff I had to remove to get the pump out, all laying on my back under the car. I was casting about for helpful videos and I found your channel. I've subscribed & I'm going to watch all your videos, good stuff. I think next time I'm going to remove the engine and transaxle as you have here, I'm sure it would take less time, enable a better, cleaner job. Great channel.

Thanks for the kind comment. I've completed a couple water pump replacements with motor in car. For me the most frustrating part of the job was trying to mount the new pump without being able to really see what you're doing. I always fear I'll mess up the form-a-gasket while trying to line it up. Engine out is about a 4-hour job, but once out, you can do so much more!
