I thought you were going to see the hanging pawn when you said "the pin remains" after Nd2. I'm the guy who uses irrational amounts of time in rapid in the early middlegame and blunders low on time.
@NickVisel2 сағат бұрын
2:48 Interesting. In this position I would want to play a rook to the c-file so as to threaten Nb4. Ne5 right away loses a pawn. Probably Rfc8 makes more sense than Rab8? Unsure and I haven’t checked the engine. But I remember Jesse Kraai saying pawns aren’t people, with respect to the minority attack - he thinks it’s the slowest plan in the Carlsbad and ever since then I think about it differently.
@NickVisel2 сағат бұрын
One other idea I had is to play e5 right away. Is that any good or is the IQP too weak?

So, what you're saying is I can still blunder and get to 1900? I'm always amazed how many defensive resources there are, especially early in the game.
@DrSkullКүн бұрын
I find that in rapid and blitz one blunder may feel like the game is over, but often your opponent will blunder back. The trick is not being so emotionally devastated that you miss it.

I’ve found that in rapid and blitz one blunder doesn’t lose the game. Your opponent will blunder back at some point. The trick is not being too emotionally devastated to catch it.

Any chance you can change your openings to match mine to make this more useful for me? No? OK, I'll still watch :-) Nice game. I'd have messed up the mate at the end and cursed myself for not just putting the rook behind the a pawn and pushing it.

It would be interesting to make the road to 1200 and lose all my rating points playing openings that I don’t know. What openings do you play, perhaps I know them well enough to play.

4:23 ...Bf6 I think you can win a piece with g4/g5 because the only retreat for the knight is g7 and that blocks the bishop's retreat when you play g5. I am talking to you in the video... g4! But -- you didn't hear me.

Sure, it’s during the whole video. But it’s getting louder from about 1:10 for example. It’s definitely a laptop/computer fan noise and it can’t be my own, as I’m watching on my phone. No one else hearing it?

How did you get that move
@sarevofaona9 ай бұрын
I have aphantasia. True to form - I missed the obvious mate on your second puzzle... I calculated what seemed like the forcing line Bxh7+, Kh8□, Bf5+, Kg8□, Bxe6+, Rf7□, Qxf7+, Kh8□, Qh5#. I had 'observed' from the outset that the knight was covering g6 so moving there was simply (incorrectly) chalked off my list of possibilities, despite the discovered check preventing the capture! Crazily, I could calculate the sort-of windmill attack on the black bishop but the seemingly more obvious tactic of simply blocking an escape square wasn't obvious to me, because I've not yet learned that pattern. This is how it always seems to play out - I just play the pattern I _do_ recognise, often at the expense of missing what was probably blindingly obvious to other players (which is either inaccurate or just wastes a lot of time). I'm also so glad you did the third example - the exact same thing happens for me. I didn't see the deflection from the rook taking the knight on the back rank because in my head that didn't come with check (the king somehow wasn't on the back rank any more!) so my queen would obviously be captured on the next move. So the whole line couldn't possibly be the solution...

As someone with Aphantasia I don't really build a story but try to remember all the influences of all the pieces at each step of the calculation. By that I mean what squares are controlled by who. makes me have to start over a lot but works really well for me :) but nice to see someone talk about this more. only seen some blogposts related to aphantasia in chess so far (although I also didn't search that much) But I am curious are you working on getting a mental image? I started doing that, hasn't worked yet though :)
@DrSkull10 ай бұрын
Great question about the mental image. I decided that I'm not gong to try to "fix" my brain. I've reached middle age and it seems fine. Instead, I'm going to lean into how my brain works best. Let me know if you try getting mental images and if it works.
