Sauron has been a favorite of mine since I was a teenager because of how interesting he is-yes he’s a badass and terrible and evil sorcerer, but Tolkien also wrote him with a distinct personality and it’s his own character flaws that spell his doom. His pride, his cowardice, his ambition, and his arrogance are what rooted him to evil-and ultimately brought him to ruin. Too many bad guys are just evil for evil’s sake with no real personality and they kind of passively wait for the heroes to destroy them. It’s also Sauron’s actions that drive the plot in a lot of this franchise (which is named after him, after all) as a sort of anti-protagonist. Tolkien was a master of his craft, and, unsurprisingly, not messing too much with the spirit of his characters can yield good results.
