In memory of my father who was a big Sonics fan and saw them won the championship in 1979.

I was at that game, probably my 400th Sonics game as a season ticket holder. My seats were a few rows down from this video, and I will always have a place for KD, as he defied ownership by engaging with the crowd and egging us on. I cried on my way out, knowing this was probably my last Sonics game. I haven't watched a minute of the NBA since July 2nd, 2008. The NBA is dead to me, but this moment will be forever in my memory. Thanks for posting.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. Meaning, I was 6 when the Sonics won the championship. I was 23, and in one of the BEST years of my life in 1996, when the Sonics broke through and made it to the Finals. Thundersonics!!

This is my father. A couple things. Since age 4 my dad had been deaf in his left ear and couldn't hear the right fullback telling him there was a man on him with the crowd noise. Secondly, 5 minutes later the Sounders tied it up at 1-1. New game then. Blank slate. And after that he made several really good saves that kept it at 1-1. His teammates couldn't get the 2nd goal. The Cosmos got a 2nd goal in the 2nd half that nothing could have been done about. Was it a mistake? Sure. Weird decision to put the ball down and start running with it, but you win and lose as a team.
@johnmarin93693 жыл бұрын
Ian, thanks for the interesting side note! Back then, a goalie could only take a few steps at the spot of possession. Nowdays, a keeper can walk anywhere, provided he gets rid of the ball within 6 seconds (which is rarely enforced). I'm guessing your dad put the ball down for that reason, not realizing how fast a guy like Steve Hunt is.
@darrenpeterson10922 жыл бұрын
Yeah I played high school varsity keeper. Back then only 4 steps unless you rolled it. That's why I just cleared it or threw it. & A few years ago pac12 U.W vs UCLA. the UCLA keeper did a gaffe like your dad!
@ianchursky2 жыл бұрын
@@darrenpeterson1092 Yeah my dad kinda pushed me to play GK. And I played when I was 12 and 13 but I was kinda small so everything just went over my head and in. So I transitioned to playing midfield and forward and that's where I ended up playing in college at Seattle U. So it worked out. But I still remember the principles of goalkeeping he taught me. Make the W with your hands. If there's a breakaway come out and get big. etc.
@ianchursky2 жыл бұрын
@John Marin @Darren Peterson The other bizarre story is there was a Sounders player in this game named Mickey Cave who managed to accidentally kill himself because he left his car running at his apartment and died of carbon monoxide poisoning when the fumes elevated up from the garage
@bimmeroo0906 Жыл бұрын
@@ianchursky Very sad story but still quite odd.....surely you would be fully aware that you had got out of the car but still left the engine running? It would be obvious..unless he had been out drinking/DUI and ''was out of it''. And thus not noticed. Or had had grief/aggravation with the job or personal relationship which tipped him over the edge ...and to end it all. He made it look accidental by going upstairs rather than sit in the vehicle and let it happen, somewhat disguising the situation. On wiki, described as an accident but still open to speculation. In January, 1996 Scottish footballer died alongside his girlfriend after carbon monoxide poisoning, maybe a gas leak in his cottage.
