90's indeed is the year where TW language reaches its international height, but unfortunately after 16 years of set back, now TW language has faced the danger of getting completely sinitize and wiped out. I really wish TW language can recover from the previous 16 years of humiliation set back!

When a person falls into poverty and runs out of money, they don't feel ashamed. In the past, if they didn't have silk clothing they would feel ashamed and couldn't go out, but now they wear torn clothes and receive guests without caring. A hungry chicken doesn't fear bamboo whisk, and a hungry person also says they don't care about shame, but in reality, it is truly so.

About an hour later, I heard the entertainers preparing to leave. I had not settled in to stay either, but I was so anxious that I did not have the courage to stand up. Although they were seasoned travelers, they would be walking at a woman's pace, so I was certain I could catch up even if I left a mile or so behind them. Still, I grew impatient sitting by the hearth. Once the entertainers had left, my daydreams began a vivid, reckless dance. The old woman returned from seeing the entertainers off. "Where are they staying tonight?" I asked.

There was a hearth in the middle of the floor of her room. When she opened the sliding door, the hot air flowed out. I stood at the threshold, hesitating. An old man sat cross-legged by the fire, his body pale and swollen like a drowning victim. He turned his languid eyes toward me. They were yellowed to the pupils as if putrefied. Around him lay piles of old letters and scraps of paper. They almost buried him. I stood stiff, staring at him, wondering how he could be alive, this mystery in the mountains.

"Boeh/beh | 欲󠇡/欲" and "ài | 愛" are frequently used interchangeably to express the idea of "wish, want". As a general rule, however, "ài | 愛" almost always expresses a manifestation of one's heart, feelings, affections, desires. "Boeh/beh | 欲󠇡/欲" is used to express simple future or a simple intention without the strong desire that "ài | 愛" implies. Practice in listening plus a knowledge of the context will gradually enable us to know the meaning of "boeh/beh | 欲󠇡/欲" and "ài | 愛". A. a) Góa¹ ài² khì. I like to go/I want to go. (Can also mean: "I need to /must go".) b) Góa¹ boeh⁸ khì. I will go/I am going. (I may be very willing to go but not necessarily so.) c) I⁷ kóng¹ boeh⁸ lim⁷ ka⁷-pi, bô⁷-ài² lim⁷ tê. He says he will drink coffee, he does not want to drink tea. In c, "boeh | 欲󠇡" is simple intention or stating a simple fact. Here "bô⁷-ài | 無⁷愛" can mean he simply does not want to drink tea right now, but it can and often will mean he never touches the stuff. d) Góa¹ chin⁷-ài² chia̍h³-pn̄g. I love rice. "Chin⁷-ài | 真⁷愛" manifests strong desire = I like very much. e) Góa¹ chin⁷ bô⁷-ài² chia̍h³-pn̄g. I can't take rice at all. (Strong dislike.) f) Lāu³-su ài² i⁷-ê⁷ ha̍k⁴-seng. The teacher loves his/her students. ("Ài | 愛" can mean "love". "Boeh/beh | 欲󠇡/欲" is never translated as "love".) B. a) Lí¹ ài² khì² Tâi³-pak bô³? Do you feel like going to Taipei (now)? (OR: Do you like to go to Taipei?) 1) Góa¹ chin⁷ bô⁷-ài² khì² Tâi³-pak. I very much dislike going to Taipei. 2) Góa¹ bô⁷-ài² khì. I don't want to go. 3) Ài, góa¹ chin⁷-ài² khì. I want to go very much. b) Lán¹ 咱¹/ Lí¹ 你¹/ Lín¹ 恁¹/ I⁷ 伊⁷ / In⁷ 𪜶⁷ boeh⁸ khì² Tâi³-pak bô³? Lán¹ 咱¹/ Góa¹ 我¹/ Goán¹ 阮¹/ I⁷ 伊⁷/ In⁷ 𪜶⁷ bô⁷-boeh⁸ 無⁷欲󠇡⁸/ m̄³ 毋³ khì² Tâi³-pak. Are you coming to Taichung? (The speaker is in Taichung, talking on the phone to one in Taipei.) 1) Boeh, góa¹ boeh⁸ khì² Tâi⁷-tiong. Yes. I am going to Taichung. 2) Bô, góa¹ bô⁷ boeh⁸ khì² Tâi⁷-tiong. No, I am not going to Taichung. 3) M̄-a³, góa¹ m̄³ khì² Tâi⁷-tiong. C. Lí¹ ū³ beh⁸ lâi bô³? Are you coming? 1) Beh, góa¹ beh⁸ khì. Yes, I am going. 2) Bô, góa¹ bô⁷-beh⁸ khì. No, I'm not going. 3) Bô⁷-ài, góa¹ bô⁷-ài² khì. No, I don't want to go. Note "ū...bô³ | 有...無³" to form a question. "Ū | 有" need not be translated; it is only the sign of a question. Note that to answer a question with "beh | 欲", the answer "Yes" is usually translated by "beh | 欲", and "No" by "Bô | 無" or "Bô⁷-ài | 無⁷愛" (not "Bô⁷-beh⁸ | 無⁷欲⁸"). D. Lí¹ ài² siá¹-jī bô³? Do you want to write characters (now) ? 1) Ài, góa¹ ài² siá¹-jī. Yes, I want to write. 2) Bô⁷-ài, góa¹ bô⁷-ài² siá¹-jī. No, I don't want to write. Note that we usually do not use "ū | 有" together with "ài | 愛" to ask a question. But to ask a question using "chin⁷-ài | 真⁷愛" we should use "ū | 有". Note also that, to answer a question containing "ài | 愛" we say "Ài | 愛" or "Bô⁷-ài | 無⁷愛". We do not answer "Bô | 無" in such a case.

The dancing girl looked to be about seventeen years old. Her hair was arranged elaborately in an unusual old style unfamiliar to me. Although it made her striking oval face look quite small, it created a beautiful harmony. She gave the impression of the girls from illustrations in old romances who were depicted with an emphasis on their extravagant hair. The dancing girl was accompanied by a woman in her forties, two older girls, and a man of about twenty-five, who was wearing a jacket with the insignia of Nagaoka Hot Springs on it.

Góan" and "Lán" Are you including me or excluding me? A peculiarity of Taiwanese is that it has 2 forms of the 1st Person Plural: "Góan" excludes the person spoken to. "Lán" includes the person spoken to.
