If the insects came in the evening, then wouldn't they want to start the lighting later? You state that their decision was to "turn the monument lighting off earlier". That sounds like the problem is at dawn, not at dusk. Regardless of this confusion, it's a great example that many people can relate.

So, the pneumatic actuators are not modulated but rather provide a constant force to off-load the electric actuators? Therefore reducing the constant current which would otherwise cause heat dissipation in the motors and increase electrical power requirements. Nice!
