In my experience Gulls, especially the Herring Gull, Ravens, Crows and Blackbirds are pretty fearless, I've seen many a cat come off 2nd best when trying to wind them up. Tbf the guy had all the classic hallmarks of someone who is lying. The old “how did I do that” line instead of the straight denial is a very common guilt indicator.
