I test played this exact instrument in 1996 in some back stage area in a brand new building wing with a fountain in front and got a new asshole ripped by some angry professor, I almost tripped trying to leave. Fascinated by the instrument and its sound, but obviously traumatised by the experience. I dropped out a few days later and never even returned to the country.

Reed stops with fractional length resonators have notoriously unstable tuning. Putting a reed like that in this location allows the organist to get at it with a long tuning knife to touch up the tuning from the console, without having to climb inside or call upon a key holder to sit at the console. It also allows the quiet sound to be heard more clearly against the rest of the pipework. It's more a practical issue than anything else.

The style of the case made me think it was a fairly late one. Not all the elaborate gewgaws and curlicues that the Victorian ones had.
