Hello! I have an expedition sea kayak since 20 years, and thinking about introduce myself into the surf ski world. My current kayak is 536 cm length (17 ft 7 inches) and 56 cm width (22 inches). I’m very confident on this dimensions. Can you orient me to the proper surf ski to begin? I hesitate between Epic V5 in polyethylene version, or the Epic V7 (which is also in PE, I want to keep touring in rock gardens and are more affordable also). Thanks and congratulations for your videos!

Hi there. You are looking for a Fennix Bluefin. That surfski will do everything you need it to do! Where are you located? Perhaps I can help send you in the right direction.

Looking at your various courses and bundles. What course do you recommend for a relatively new paddler (<1yr) with poor technique? I do a mixture of small surf, and training for 5-10km races. I'm super slow, and seem to only paddle with my arms (can't seem to activate trunk rotation and leg drive), and consequently get fatigued quite quickly. In a tippy old Hayden. Thanks!
@DawidMocke3 ай бұрын
Hi there sorry for taking so long to respond. The best one to start with is the Masters of Surfski as it relaly give a great intro to the sport and what you need to know.

@@DawidMocke thanks, I'm not far into this course and it's looking good so far and given me a few things to practice on the water. Still struggling to activate leg drive and trunk without feeling tippy, but will persevere!

I often end up turning sideways in the wave after catching it, even with a strong brace. What am I doing wrong here?
@DawidMocke3 ай бұрын
That happens often when learning to ride waves. If you are referring to going sideways after the wave has broken (gone to white water) then it's because your rudder is in some very messy aerated water being pushed around. The best way to avoid this is to try sprint away from the wave as it begins to crumble. If you are going sideways before that moment, i.e. on the "face" of the wave it's because you have either oversteered or stopped paddling a bit early. Try get yourself onto the face up until the moment you can feel the surfski is going forward without you having to paddle, and then ride the swell. You can do a very light brace to the side as you ride.

What's your advice for the novice who always seems to be turned sideways once the wave picks them up? I've tried steering with both feet and paddle, tried keeping rudder straight and just using paddle to try stay straight, and also paddling harder to stay in front, but always seem to get turned on those bigger waves
@DawidMocke9 ай бұрын
IT's a delicate balance (excuse the pun) between all three strategies you've mentioned. Mostly is being used to the feeling of rising the swell and using the rudder at the same time. You need to take a few extra strokes as the speed of the ski picks up with the swell. That way you keep your rudder engaged.

@@DawidMocke I note on your Masters of Surfski course to pop one leg out too. I might have to try that (I guess on the opposite side from where you're turning). Only problem is my ski has a separate space for each foot, so it's quite difficult to put the foot on the opposite footplate to keep the rudder straight as you recommend in the video

Gunther the last month I have been using the surf ski for stamina and to have fun in the waves. My dad and I have around a 10km paddle route around the close Seychelles islands. Other than that I have joined a paddle club and am preparing for the upcoming K1 kayak race events. I love being able to spend the afternoon on the water through different sports or hobbies. Have a great week!
