I have a children's jacket im replacing a sport zipper in, but the teeth are molded onto the zipper tape and the teeth are rather large for sewing over when i do the top stitching at the top of the jacket. Is it okay to pull zipper teeth off at the top of the zipper that will be enclosed by the jacket fabric?

you know, i just came to the realization that it's good to have choices when making a bag. you can put in a recessed zipper or a hidden flap closure. I have come to the conclusion that i prefer to put in a hidden flap using a velcro enclosure or metal snap. and there are so many ways to create a bag.
@dottiemathews685328 күн бұрын
Now i am going to try this with the gusset. put on the clips first, then snip the ends.

Wonderful tutorial, however I do not think this bag should be considered skill lever beginner. IMHO it is at the very least intermediate. I have not been making bags for very long maybe a year or two but I find that gussets and zippers not to be beginner, but that's just me. Butt again, thanks for your tutorial..
@4golfing2 ай бұрын
much easier to also leave the bottom of the lining open. turn the bag through the lining., then pull the lining up through the open pocket, sew the lining shut, then push back in. this way only the pocket left to sew.
@mgrahamsews2 ай бұрын
Yes, this is a method I use anytime I'm not filming a tutorial because my hands often can't handle turning through a pocket. When I'm filming though, I stick to what the designer has written in the pattern because I don't want to cause confusion. I film so everyone can follow along exactly as the pattern is written. 😃

I'm sorry about this! I'm not sure what is causing you to have a hard time hearing the video. 🤔 I've retested on a few different devices and the volume is good on my end. You may need to check your KZbin settings to ensure your volume is up. However, this was filmed over a year ago, before I got a microphone for recording, so the volume/sound it much better and clearer now. 😃

Can you please tell me what kind of tape you are using to cover the snap? Also I use the same machine as you. What stitch length do you like to use when topstitching your bags?

It's a duct tape from the dollar store, Dollarama. My stitch length varies between 4 and 4.5. I just turn the dial, as long as it's past 4, I'm good, lol.

Hi … when you clipped the rounded curved corners I saw you clipped through both the gusset and the panel. I’ve only seen the gusset clipped before. What are the PROS and CONS to this method? Thank you
@mgrahamsews3 ай бұрын
I've only ever snipped both. It helps both open up in the same place and ease in at the same place. Not sure if that makes sense. I just clip my gusset to the exteriors, then snip those curves between my clips. It's probably just a personal preference for each sewist. 😊

I just bought this pattern and I wanted to use an XL double panel from K&A. But I’m worried about the pattern on the flap. Can you tell me how much of the flap is shown on the front? From the top of the bag to the bottom of the flap? The top of the panel I’m wanting to use is approx 26” wide by 18 high, and the print is right in the middle. I hope this makes sense. It looks like it might work when I set the pattern piece on it, but I want to make sure before I start cutting. Thanks for any help you can give me 😅

Sorry to disappoint you but a lot of us have a 12x12 as we cut things beside material.
@mgrahamsews4 ай бұрын
You can use your 12x12 mats, it's all I used when I first got my Cricut but quickly learned having the 12x24 mat saved me time. When I'm making SVGs I make it using a 12x24 Artboard. When you import these SVGs into Cricut, if the pattern pieces are larger than your 12x12 mat, it won't be able to cut because they won't fit. However, if they are smaller, Cricut will place them on the 12x12 mat for you. It's a great feature that Cricut Design Space does this for us. Unfortunately though, Brother Canvas users don't have this as an option, because their software will actually change the size of the pattern pieces to fit on the 12x12 mat. ☹️ I also use my Cricut for more than fabrics (altho this video was geared towards helping sewists use the SVGs I make, but many features are the same for the many uses of this machine) It's a great machine and has helped me a lot because intricate cuts are too hard for me. 😃

Wish I would have seen this video using the quilting cotton. I tried making it on my Juki TL18 using WRC for exterior and interior, was too much for my machine.
@mgrahamsews4 ай бұрын
I'm sorry your machine struggled. My machine is the same as yours, just an older model. The vinyl I used for this bag is thinner (so it's like a quilting cotton interfaced with a woven interfacing), and I used quilting cotton for the lining. When using thicker materials, you can cut the interfacing smaller so it is kept out of the seam allowances. Also, try a bigger needle, sometimes I'll use an 18 needle when I'm using thicker fabrics. You can also use a mallet to hammer the materials to help flatten them, it "squishes" them together to make it easier for the machine to get through the bulk. Put a scrap of fabric between your bag and the mallet so you don't damage the materials. Also, adjusting yout presser foot tension so it is tighter helps. These are things I do when I'm using thick materials, especially for materials like WRC for both the exterior and lining. 😊

I think all of us watching, would benefit more from all the tips and tricks you show as you’re actually stitching. For example, the back stitching away from the hardware you talked about in this video. It was very difficult to see what you were actually doing. Just a suggestion for future videos. Thank you!
