This movie shows the reality that others aren't immune to commiting atrocities against human rights like the Nazis did. And that it's even easier to do so when you have great justification (like the kids are german). The only way to escape this cycle is to see the humanity in others and not blindly follow orders as the movie shows. I wish we learned more about historical events like this, because it shows that you don't have to be a nazi to do something that nazis would do.
