The one negative is that these are stuck on Evercade.

I agree, but at least there's far worse places to be stuck. Also, you can get these on PC - the mod these are based on has been around for ages. I imagine an official release will happen one day too.

On your comments on Wukong, I will say it definitely gets better as time goes on, narratively and scenically, but I understand your criticisms. It definitely feels like the start of something great though and I can imagine Game Science are only gonna get better from here.

Maybe. I mean, I don't really care for a game like this in terms of narrative or whatever, I really just want them to make a more interesting, unique or mechanically tighter game next time around.

ah that title sums up why im not interested as someone who still has the console the ps3 is what made me stop gaming hahaha
@andihamilton9 күн бұрын
Honestly, it's more of a PS2 styled title - it's just visually more like a PS3/360 era game, so it feels like an early gen PS3 game. Before the homogenisation began to kick in. If you like a PS2 era action game I think you'll find something here. If you don't, I'd swerve it. What was it that killed your interest in the PS3 period, out of interest?

Been meaning to pick this up but now I'm thinking of buying a disc version. Great review. I'd sooner a thousand weird, interesting 7/10 games than any AAA slop. Having to stick to trend-hopping safe games must be a very sad way of spending your time.

I'm only about half way through, but there's something about the atmosphere and mechanics that tells a story almost more than the dialogue does. The disposable bodies and your choice of how to use them, it's kind of like how Syndicate felt bleak and cyberpunk by exploiting its characters.
@andihamilton11 күн бұрын
100%. I hadn't thought of the Syndicate similarity but that's definitely there. It adds a really subtle feeling early on that maybe Night Owl isn't all it seems. The in-between level back stories of the rarities are fantastic, too. Honestly, I kind of wish they went further with the concept but I fear they were pushing the limits of their budget with this one as it is.

Coming back to this vid to ask: how do digital controls feel on Soul Reaver here? Seem to recall dual shock being very nice on the PS1 version and kind of crap on every other port

Interesting to hear your thoughts about the carts. Over all Evercade things are what I’m most into when it comes to new releases. I see your point about these collections, and it’ll be exciting to see what’s coming next. I’d be overjoyed if Evercade got some if the uncommon games like Tail Concerto or Harmful Park. A unique translation of some Japan exclusive RPG or action game would be very cool too.
@andihamiltonАй бұрын
Thanks! I too would be very interested in some of the recent fan translated stuff but I bet that is a rights nightmare to get sorted.
@bjornh1527Ай бұрын
Sure, but not impossible:) Blaze has released a few translated games like Mappy Kids, Pri Pri Primitive Princess as well as new translation of the Rival Turf/ Rushing Beat intro. Maybe an RPG would be asking much, but an action title with less text maybe??? If we’re lucky?

Both of these look like fantastic collections. I've only held off TR as I beat the remaster version earlier in the year, but I'll definitely be picking it up soon enough. LoK Collection is on its way (after amazon effed up my preorder) so I'm a bit delayed starting that. I enjoyed this video, and it definitely sells them for me. I'm with you on the Resi manifestation. As soon the giga carts were announced, that was the top of my wishlist. And evercade have worked with Capcom a couple of times. It'd be rude not to at this point.

That first Legacy of Kain really felt like it came out of nowhere at the time. I sort of wish the series had returned to Kain earlier and never felt satisfied with how the Soul Reaver games played out. And speaking of Core, I hope Evercade put out a Shellshock/Thunderhawk compilation
@andihamiltonАй бұрын
Shellshock and Thunderhawk would be excellent. It's such a shame Kain's character got tied up in all the rubbish legal "who owns what" nonsense after that first game. Given how much of a mess that could've been, the series still being decent and managing to pull off a satisfying narrative arc is actually pretty impressive.

Big budget safe games seem virtually unavoidable. It's very likely that the budget for SW: Outlaws is about what both of the recent Dune films cost to make combined, and they're about as daring as any recent 'big budget' films have been. They do that and have some gimmicky gameplay (like, Guardians of the Galaxy - an otherwise excellent narrative adventure with cruddy team based shooter gameplay) that doesn't work, or a plot that is too divisive (Last Jedi) would tank sales far more than simply being middle-of-the-road. I think Disney taking the wrong lessons from Solo bombing and deciding mid-budget productions aren't acceptable and everything Star Wars has to be tentpole is a pretty awful outcome. Do stuff on the budget of Hellblade 1, enough to feel decently polished but not obscene, and then if it does well you can throw a standard budget at a sequel.
@andihamiltonАй бұрын
I agree. They are unavoidable and that is entirely why the AAA industry is diving headfirst into the bin, if they're not already there. It's completely unsustainable.
@JesusKristovАй бұрын
Have no need for an evercade (got a wee emulation device) but between these and the duke nukem 1 and 2 cart I keep struggling not to buy one. These are precisely the kind of games I would have asked for. Hell, the tomb raider cart is precisely what I expected about a year ago. Blood Omen and Soul Reaver on a single cart is a genuine dream come true.

@andihamilton3 ай бұрын
There's still nothing. Splashdown, although a step in the right direction with the way you cut through the water, is still more akin to the sequel than it is the N64 game. I should also stress, the bit of footage I was going to use to show the 'vibe' of Splashdown was a bit showing it has All-Star by Smash Mouth on the soundtrack but it would've given me a copyright telling off. It's a very 00s game.
@JesusKristov3 ай бұрын
So many n64 games are impossible to play with the right context. I never had one, but I remember playing n64 at friends houses and it feeling like alien technology. Emulation removes a lot of that strange feeling. Loading a rom and using an Xbox controller puts enough between you and the software that a lot of that experience is lost. These days familiarisation and games building on that tech has wiped away most of that magic but in just the right circumstances and just the right frame of mind you can see through the curtain. Mario 64 is frankly rubbish on Switch but still feels amazing on the original console. Wave Race 64 is good no matter where you play it. Nothing has ever quite matched it, not even the sequel.
