Its competent enough, but he must have been gutted when he first heard the Buggles version.

Blew me away when it came out and I stumbled across it in Woolies. Still working its magic. Shhh Let’s keep them a secret for just us.

Yes, I know Mr Woolley co-wrote the song with Messers Horn and Downes (of The Buggles - of which Woolley WAS a member at the time), and they both recorded/released their versions almost simultaneously (Mr Woolley's being recorded with Camera Club). I far prefer The Buggles' version, and it's NOT just due to familiarity. This version starts off with a frenetic - practically manic-sounding percussion opening, and goes into the lyrics after what can best be described as a false drum intro. This version sounds as though they just wanted to get through this - 'rush it', so to speak as fast as possible - so they'd be done with it. True, neither Messers Horn nor Woolley would ever be mistaken for the best vocalist, but, whereas Mr Horn (and his version) use his limited vocal abilities to good effect, it's practically the opposite here. It's somewhat like, 'ok, Woolley's no pitch, that's cool! So, if he sings it really fast, that's gotta be 'original'-sounding!" Camera Club's version is a (far-placed) second to The Buggles' well-crafted version. It really falls flat on its face.

The default version of this from the Buggles often brings me to tears of 80s nostalgia. I don't understand how I didn't know about this until now.

This was probably the worst thing this great band did, it's their original songs that you get into them for, as Will Birch (drummer/lyricist) and John Wicks (rhythm guitar/music) were a great songwriting team, one of the best of the power pop era in the late 70's and early 80's.

This was a fun addition to their live set, but they didn't really need to record it especially as their own material was so strong.

I enjoy this version. It is more experimental but pop. Geoff and Trevor's breakdown of their version had intention how they built up their version. I always thought the Buggles were an interesting concept. They were originally the Bugs. They were envisioned to be what if the Beatles came out during an age were technology ruled music. There was a band called the Bugs and they changed the name.

Thank you for this. I am a lifelong Camel fan and Breathless is my favourite song of the many great Camel sets. In fact this is the exit music for my funeral to bring life back to the gathering. Others are Drafted (Nude), Never Let Go, City Life, Simple Pleasures.Watching the Bobbins. Camel are seriously under-rated band.
Sounds a lot like Talking Heads. I guess it's the new wave feel of that time. This one is amusing, Trevor Horn did a marvelous job producing and arranging the song.
