I bought a new Mk II Golf diesel in 1992 which was lovely built like a tank - the diesel non turbo was a bit sluggish alright but otherwise not bad and it was my first ever brand new car. But the following year I had to go abroad with the UN to Cyprus and we were allowed a duty free car so had to sell my golf in Ireland and then had to buy something quick because of legal time limits for duty free cars in Cyprus. Only there was nothing nice immediately available so had to go for a new Corolla 2.0DXL saloon and the only colour was refrigerator white. Such a bland car with no character so I sold that quick when I got back and bought a new Opel 1.7TD saloon - another beautiful car also built like a tank. So for the years 1992, 1993 and 1994 I had bought a brand new car during each year. Had the Opel 5 years though and loved it even if it wasn't "my type" of car. Sold that privately and bought a new BMW 318iS coupe M sport in metallic black in 1998 - boy that was some car.

This was my first car, i bought it when i was 17 but wasn’t allowed to drive it… because i was 17, insurance per year was about 8 times more than i had paid for it… so it rotted off road for more than 10 years before being scrapped..

When top gear was good

Brought a corolla years back in white I modified it fully body kit lights alloys exhaust sound system full respray was a white changed it to white flip paint when the sunlight use to hit it would give a shade of blue was a smooth car to drive and fun miss it at times

Now in the modern day you are BANNED from undertaking completely, it is a criminal offence & the motorways are now even worse because of it.

I was 14 when this car was new...loved it then and still do....

I got this model on a T reg, about two years old at the time. It only had about 9000 miles on the clock. It was the newest car id owned since passing my test, it was wonderful to drive. The 1.25 engine was such a nice unit. Comfortable, great handling, refined on the motorway and pulled well. Ive had a lot of cars for my sins but to this day I would list it in my top five cars that I’ve owned. I sadly had to sell it due to financial difficulties, I always regret that. My life was rubbish after that and still is.

That's the Mk5 Fiesta not the Mk4. The yanks call it a 4 , but in the UK its a 5 (I passed my test in one).

£12,500 for the Ghia model would be a shade over £25k in today's money.....assuming that N reg is a 96 year car. Not sure there's many buyers lining up for £25k Festers....

i saw a 1992 Toyota Corola in Dublin last week ... i was amazed at its longevity...its bodyworkd looked ok...the owner probably gets more attention than those owning one of those ubiquitous super expensive/energy inefficent luxurious SUVs. 😂

I had a Mk4 Fiesta as my first car. Had no power steering, was a 3 door, No ABS, it was very basic but was economical and fun to drive, it had to have a replacement engine as the original seized up due to a mechanical fault, had it for 3 years but sold it for £60, as it needed a lot of work,

These and the 'happy' facelift Fiestas which followed were superb little cars. I had one many years ago and it was definitely the most reliable car I've ever owned. I can't even think of a problem I had with it.

Had a dodgy MOT Ka for my first car. The face lifted mk4 fiesta as a 2nd car gave me 5 years with next to no bother at all. I think the mk6 was the best fiesta (before the eco boost came in of course) but this mk4 is a close 2nd

Mk4 Fiesta - the SECOND ugliest hatchback of the late nineties after the Lancia Ypsilon... Having said that, my mate had one and the Mk4 was a grrrrrrrreat drive. I owned a Mk1 Fiesta 1996-1998 (appalling in all ways except visibility but Mum had a Mk6 Fiesta before she died, and it was either that Mk6, or an old Mk1 Focus I had, that I can safely say were the best cars I used regularly (beat all German cars I owned).
