Why fly fisherman pull on the line and it just dangles below the rod? Why do they not reel in the fish? Is this reel not suitable for reeling? Why is the line so thick? Also why use bobbers, doesn’t rod provide the feel of a bite? I just found out about fly fishing and cannot find any answers.

Fly fishing has many similarities to spin fishing with a few subtle differences. With casting, think about a fly rod casting the think line instead of a heavy lure. Theres a lot more to unpack with fly fishing, check out our beginner how to series for more! kzbin.info/aero/PLMSJFtNxuQoT7HxrNLu9oMwPHGdwRhIf4

Cheers, really appreciate it! Most fly rods come in four piece configurations and are easy to travel with to begin with but an ULTRA packable rod to look at is the Redington Trailblazer which comes in six pieces! Give us a call if you want to chat with one of our guides about setting up a rod :) www.tomsoutdoors.com.au/collections/fly-fishing-gear-redington-fly-rods/products/redington-trailblazer-fly-rod-w-tube

Great video and great information. Can I just challenge you on one thing? Add a 25 pound or even start at 30 pound Maxima. Most pre-made 9 foot leaders are closer to 25 pounds. The extra thick butt will make casting that wool 100% easier.

Take a 1500$ rod and a 1500$ reel and a 200$ fly line... Then tell someone that fell in the river to let it go 💸 I'd still chose my life over it but it's kind of funny to think about it. (I am about the only guy to be out there wearing a PFD on every outings even small streams...)

Great videos mate. I fish very big, fast braided rivers here in NZ and tend to leave the waders at home opting for wet wading most of the time. Better off chilly than dead. Things can go pear shaped in an instant. I hope people take on board your info. Good on ya.

i have one question, does it matter is you use streamers in rivers because i have see people fish them like that i thought they would be used mainly for lakes and impoundments? thank you.
@TomsOutdoorsFlyFishing
@TomsOutdoorsFlyFishing 2 ай бұрын
Hi there! Streamers are probably the most versatile type of fly there is because you can fish them anywhere. We extensively use streamers in rivers; both different types and styles (keep an eye out for how a to fish streamers in rivers video, coming hopefully this year). If you need any more specific advice for your river conditions and what streamers to use please let us know! Cheers! Mickey

how does this compare with a kokopelli xpd? would you say the NRS is tougher?
@TomsOutdoorsFlyFishing
@TomsOutdoorsFlyFishing 2 ай бұрын
Hi Leo, The NRS is lighter overall (by about a kilo) than the XPD but reinforced in particular areas that apply especially to fishing; for instance where your wading boots rub the deck. We've paddled both extensively and I'd say the NRS is tougher where you need it to be for fishing and will suit any rough adventure you could throw at it. Cheers!

I've fished that stretch many times. Changes in water level, weather and time of year make it feel completely different from one trip to the next. Sometimes the rainbows are dominant, sometimes the big browns slip out to play. Such fun!

The cold water will make you hyperventilate, so expect that, and after you get your knees to your chest focus on taking deep breaths. Another good reason to practice so you know what to expect when it happens for real.

No worries! To start off a basic kit would consist of, flies, fly box, leaders, tippet and nippers (or scissor forceps). These are the absolute essentials that you'll use everyday and which you can build upon based on the time of year you're fishing and when you start to bush bash.
