What are those brass pcb stand things called and where did you get them?
@dansloss2566Ай бұрын
Hi Rex. The LPF board doesn't show which toroid goes left or right. You put the 15-turn toroid where I thought the 17-turn toroid should be, based on the power efficiency module schematic when looking at the capacitor locations and their values. Does it make any difference? I've been chasing why I have no RF out and found I have a cracked toroid, so I've got some T30-2 on order. 73.

Rex. This may be slightly off topic, but I don't know how else to get ahold of you. I ordered the X-CHECKer Crystal kit on June 26, 2024. It has been nearly two months, and I haven't received it yet. I tried to contact you twice via the email given through Paypal, but that did not yield a response either. Not sure if those went directly to your spam filter or not. Can you get back to me?

I received the kit yesterday. Thanks for following up.

Rex, thanks for going through the function of each component of the circuit....great information and I finally understand how this works!! .....however, you skipped over the function of C1....it is the electrolytic across the key jack....wondering what that capacitor does.....could you please briefly explain what the function of that capacitor??? Thank you!! 73 Pete KD2OMV
@QRPme7 ай бұрын
If you check the schematic, you will see that C1, 22uf, is NOT across the key jack but actually connected to +12 and ground AFTER the 12 volts passes through the 1N5818 polarity protection diode. It takes AC ripple out of the DC supply line and helps keep the +12 stable when the keying applies and removes the load of the transmitter... On the other side of the key jack is C2 which provides a short to ground for any RF that shows up on the +12V keyed line when the transmitter is active.

I just built the two you sent me last winter, and made a short video of building and using it for my 6, 8, & 11 year old grandchildren. They know Poppi builds radios but the concept will come home when we go up to Chicago in April so they can learn to send their name to me and each other. Then I can show them how I talk to my ham friends in various forms. ;-)

2 questions and a comment. No sound. Why not do some Sardine Can Kits? 1/4 or 1/8th wave maybe. I have the 35 Anniversary TT2 Can I buy the rest of the buildathon? Got to get back on the air again.

I set my iron to 800 deg F that way it will heat the soldier joint quickly. If you heat the soldier joint to slowly heat will travel to the component being attached

These work really good if you incorporate a laser led. Frosted lens for target protects eyes from laser. Much greater distance.

So - you're using the blanks just because it would take too long to grind the 6574.570 up to 7030? But it could be done?

These kits were a big winner with a group of Boy Scouts from Quakertown, PA who came to our Maine museum for three days of workshops. One of these workshops included making the Two Scouts Night Sender. The Scouts liked the opportunity of learning soldering with Rex Harper and making these modern versions of a technology dating back to the 1840s with Morse himself albeit without LED lights or 9V alkaline batteries that you snap, snap off. This is the kind of thing that more young people would be learning in their spare time because of its rewards if there were more adults to introduce them to the technology fortunately Rex's kits are out there to grab on to when the opportunity arises.
Camera did not capture your bends of battery connectors well. But your explanations helped a lot.

Rex, I ordered one of these during the stream What do you recommend for a strip to isolate the battery from the rest of the radio?
@QRPme2 жыл бұрын
You can use practically anything from little strips of bare copper pcb to 'guardrails' made from formed resistors or SIP male headers, disc caps. Anything laying around the bench that you can solder to the long pads. I'll throw a couple of examples up on the web page....later tonight or tomorrow. Gotta go machine up some Toroid EZ tools to fill some back orders.
