A lampara net is not a purse seine, as it has no rings or purse lines to close the bottom. Instead, lampara nets and purse seines are types of round haul nets of which there are hundreds worldwide. The small net pictured in the video would normally be kept as circular as possible during haul back operation, and hauling would stop at the beginning of the sack containing the fish and the net would be dried up by hand at that point. The construction of the two nets are radically different.

ok, I get what you mean, you get a undercut pocket at the back end, the fish can't go down or back, only forwards and hauling in the wings prevents this too. the only chance the fish have is going down through the space between the closing wings.

so from what I'm seeing, this is essentially a beach seine, but used in open water, right?

So much ignorance in here (par for the course for KZbin). The great whites were released not because they were getting unhealthy. It was because 1) aquarium staff can't get the shark out safely if it gets really big and 2) if it gets too big it'll start harassing other animals in the tank. The first white shark started attacking the smaller animals at a certain point. It does just fine in there, stop being so sensational and insisting they're being abused.

I think it's awesome that finally an aquarium has managed to keep a Great White. I always wondered when one would. If your going to leave comments on Great Whites in captivity DMC then make sure you put in a case for Shamu.

I have been to this aquarium many times, I love this place. This aquarium has had 3 White Sharks, I have seen 2 of them. The Tank is enormous, it should have alot of room. When the shark shows signs of un-improvement they release it. It is an amazing site.

They CAN keep it. It did very well there. They released it into the wild because they were only holding it for study.
