Ha, that was the bike trailer! You can just about see my electric bike parked up on the canal-side in the shot of me going from the solar panels on the deck back to the cock-pit. I bought the trailer to carry the shopping, the laundry and jerry cans of diesel for the engine whilst traveling down the canals from Brittany to the med! I’m spending a lot of time in the UK at the moment to care for my parents but hope to get back to the boat as regularly as possible. Cheers for the comment!!

I understand an old boat like Minuet is not as comfortable as a modern boat be it a sailboat or a canal cruiser but it’s all I can afford and I love sailing too so I have the best of both worlds to some extent. It’s just a pity I’ll never be able to bring her down the Monty, perhaps I’ll have to trade her in and look for a small narrow boat to do that!

@@svminuet at least you are living the life you want. I begged my wife to sell everything cash out retirement invest and live off dividends. Buy a inexpensive house in a cheap corner of Canada for our stuff. Buy a nice 40ft sailboat and cruise the world. We have the money to do it until we die, comfortably. She will not leave her Toronto suburban house and the rat race she so hates so much on a daily basis. I envy you sir, something I try to never do. If I could I would….

I think the problem with the driver was that you briefly turned the camera to film him and said 'smile your on candid camera', if you hadn't done that he would most likely have carried on. When one is filming you should really be respectful for others privacy (regardless of the laws relating to what you can and can't do). In this case you could have easily avoided the issue, maybe consider this next time.
@svminuet
@svminuet Ай бұрын
Thanks for that, as soon as I saw the car was stopping, I turned the camera away from the driver and said “Smile you’re on candid camera” more to myself and the camera before the car had stopped and as the gentleman was winding down the car window. But I take your point, one must always be respectful to others whilst filming in public. Thanks for your comment.

P.S. I don't know if you'd be interested in joining Railway Ramblers - a nationwide group dedicated to walking disused railway tracks (with permission where required). Sections around Llanymynach (not too far from you) link with the canal and have some surprising extant buildings! 🙂

I'm glad you took my comment in the positive way it was intended 🤗.... a couple of things about the Monty you might not find elsewhere. Tom Rolt - joint founder of the IWA and saviour of the Tal-y-llyn railway made his home in and wrote "Narrowboat" aboard 'Cressy' a converted working (I believe fly-boat) which had previously been owned by the Peate mill family along the said canal. If you want to get an idea of the canal back in the day, the 1998 BBC production of Our Mutual Friend includes Paul McGann using one of the locks - where a murder takes place!!! (The giveaway being the very unusual wheel lock paddle gear). Hope you also make it to the Mon-Brec (originally two canals:- The Brecknock and Abergavenny Canal, and the Monmouthshire Canal) where there are substantial remnants of the iron master 'Cosher Bailey' and his activities. Hope that's not too much information 🤔

I'd like to know if this moisture barrier cinder block treatment is studied to last for many generations as the previous canal construction has. The moisture barrier being held down by solid cinder blocks looks beautifully simple, but the cinder blocks hold water that will break them apart when the water freezes. Fresh water starts to expand below 4°C until if freezes with 9% expansion. Since the blocks are being used as hold down weight and protection for the moisture barrier it is likely thought if it they break apart into gravels they will still perform their task. As nearly buoyant small water logged gravels they can be easily picked up and spread by canal boat wakes. Since much of the water in the canal will remain liquid the damage will take place around the water line which would move downward with poor water level care. I see the cinder blocks are not going as high as the what would look like the normal water line.

Yes, I did speak to some of the volunteers about it, the puddle clay option offered a traditional solution but would require large amounts of material to be excavated and was vulnerable to future erosion and leakage. These pages from the Canal and river Trust make interesting reading. To my understanding different methods of lining are employed according to the porosity of each individual stretch of restoration. I understand that after testing it was found that the stretch of canal just south of the Crick Heath basin and bridge will require no lining at all! But that just 50 metres further down the canal leaked like a sieve and is the section of canal now being lined as we speak! I was filming on the Chesterfield today, I use a drone and a woman who worked for the council tried to tell me I wasn’t allowed to fly a drone in the whole of Derbyshire. I think she confused the council with the Civil Aviation Authority. I soon explained how wrong she was and we had a pleasant conversation after but it does show how even council people have little knowledge of the rules around filming on public land.
@svminuet
@svminuet 2 ай бұрын
Yes, the rules are quite clear. Keep your feet on publicly accessible land and your (less than 250g) drone away from prisons and airports. The CAA are very helpful and will advise if one is in doubt! Heavier drones need need a pilot ID and are restricted by distance to buildings ... I think!
