@@greywolf9783 i'm almost positive you cannot get a squirrel totem in Kaycees Mod, I just played Inscryption recently and beat it with all active challenges and sunk quite a few hours into it. No squirrel totem offer ever. Pretty sure that's just an Act 1 thing or yeah it would be pretty op.

Yes, I read the spec to understand all the details, although I skimmed over some sections that just aren't used in practice, like hierarchical mode for example. And yeah, the fact that it's so difficult to gather info on the format is exactly why I wanted to make these videos!

Man, congrats. I tried to read the spec found online at w3 (www.w3.org/Graphics/JPEG/itu-t81.pdf) and it was terrible experience. Besides this doc, I tried to get the original one from ITU and ISO page and both charges for the spec, now I don't want to pay for the original but I dont know if the one that I read at w3 is the same that is found in the ITU/ISO site. Probably I wouldnt understand a thing from original specs either...@@danielharding3688

I'd say the point of changing the MCU size is because you want to perform DCT on an 8x8 square of _actual_ samples in order to get good quality when creating the jpg from the full resolution source image. So for a sub-sampled image, if you did like you suggested and always read an 8x8 MCU from the stream by alternating through the color channels: full 8x8 Y channel, reduced 4x4 Cb channel, reduced 4x4 Cr channel.. Then you'd either have to perform DCT on this 4x4 square (not exactly sure how that'd work) or you'd have to stretch the 4x4 into a 8x8 and perform DCT on that, which is objectively worse than performing DCT on the original source image.

@@danielharding3688 Thanks, it makes sense now! Either MCU or DCT block can be 8*8 when sub-sampling comes into play, and a 8*8 DCT block is a better choice

Simply that it's what I felt the internet needed. I find this stuff fascinating but no complete explanation existed so I decided to make it for myself.
