Really refreshing to see a video from people who have been doing it for a long time in real conditions! Having been gardening for years with limited success on an exposed, boggy, clay and rock hillside in the north I get so tired of watching ‘how to’ videos from people who are clearly beginners with near perfect locations. You have a lot of valuable experience to share and I will be watching this video and others again so I can take some detailed notes! Many thanks x

I recognised a few people in this video, and guessed which town in mid Wales it might be, then the view of the old market hall at the bottom of Great Oak Street gave it away! ❤

Very nice, I'm in a similar situation in a frost pocket of ceredigion. What aspect is the greenhouse? As in does the main glazed front face South?

I like the monthly breakdowns and temperature mapping. I have purple passion fruit, the fruit are not edible until they've started to shrivel. If you haven't tried them, Mexican Sour Gherkins are an easy and tasty little treat you could grow intermingled with your other vine produce. One vine will give you hundreds of fruit. They're basically snack cucumbers, I love them.

Just perfect balm for the soul. The atmospherics, the forest, the river, the rocks, the solitude. Have to walk here someday. I've walked around Clywedog Reservoir but not here. The landscape of Wales is so special.

Two Questions? After year two did you direct seed or grow seedlings in pots/trays for season 3.
@TheTenterhookTimesАй бұрын
Well it has been a mixture of both. We direct sow some salad leaves and climbing french beans, for example, but we grow seedlings such as tomatoes, squash, and lettuce in pots and trays, either in the warmth of our house early in the season or on the greenhouse bench later on. We then transplant these into the beds once they reach a sensible size. We have to keep our eye open for mice though! There will be more about mice in our Year 3 video! 🐭😂

In looking at the design of your green house, I'm surprised that you didn't insulate the upper part of your north wall, and slope earth against the lower part to increase the thermal mass. Any particular reason?
@TheTenterhookTimes2 ай бұрын
Hi Rich, thanks for your comment. The lower part of the north wall is built into the hillside so is extremely well insulated. We haven't considered insulating the upper part of the wall as so far we're happy with the temperature maintained during the winter. It's not usually as cold here as it is in North American winters for example as our climate is warmed by the effect of the Gulf Stream. Of course that could change, so it's something we might consider in the future. You can watch our latest greenhouse video which shows greater detail of the original build if that's of interest: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXrYlpmHiZygedU

@@TheTenterhookTimes Thanks for your response. I was just thinking that it might increase your growing season into winter. But now that I think about it, in Wales, you probably get so little sunlight in January and February between the high latitude and cloudy weather it might not help you much. I'm thinking about homesteading in Kentucky or Tennessee, which is more like the latitude of Algeria, though I suspect there will be a lot of overcast days, compared to my current situation in Colorado.

We've watched all of these pumpkin festival videos and thoroughly enjoyed them. Will this event be staged again in the future?
@TheTenterhookTimes2 ай бұрын
That's great you enjoyed the videos - it was a really fun festival. I'm not sure if it will be staged again as we weren't involved with the organisation of the festival, that was done by an amazing local organisation called The Wilderness Trust in Llanidloes, so you'd need to ask them. They run the lovely Hanging Gardens cafe in the town. Thanks for watching! 😃

Ooh aargh,buy a Combine,it the 21st century😅
@geegnosis88884 ай бұрын
With a name like yours i would have pegged you as 19th Century. Anyway, scything is much cheaper and more green in small areas of hay. Combines are usually for corn (ie cereals not just maize). I don't think you know your country lore ver well especially as the grass has to be turned and dried before it becomes hay. Only then can it be gathered and bundled for the winter feeding. Combines pick the whole lot up and shred the cereals from the stalks. These stalks are not used for feeding but as bedding. So, all in all your comment was facetious.

I live in the Perth hills in Western Australia so I’m dealing with a very different climate. The biggest challenge here is long hot dry summers and infertile gravelly soil. We have sporadic frosts in winter, but only at night. My biggest pest is kangaroos which can reck a garden in one night so I have high fences to keep them out. I love looking at how other people overcome their food garden challenges. Your food garden is beautiful.❤
