These guys are the players I looked up to in my early days of learning to play guitar and still do. Anytime 'Guitar Player' magazine had an article about them I read every word over and over.

Many years ago, Larry played at a Jazz Festival in the city I live in. The guy who organized the Jazz Festival did a weekly radio show where he interviewed people he knew in the jazz community. One week, he invited Larry to do an interview. The interview starts, and Larry is very unresponsive. Short answers and completely unengaged. This went on for 20 minutes, I kept listening because it was unbelievable at what a dick Larry was being to this radio host/jazz festival organizer. At the very end of the interview, Larry "remembers" he wants to play again at our local festival, and Larry tells the interviewer/fest organizer, how he really likes the festival and really wants to play for it! At that moment, Larry magically becomes very engaging and delightful. Exposing his disrespectful behavior as intentional. I spoke with the radio host a few weeks later and I commented on how good a job he did managing an uncooperative guest. I asked him if Larry will be playing at the fest? He said, "He will never be invited after that interview". And he wasn't.

An incredible being. I was blessed with an introduction by a couple of friends that resulted in a one hour conversation at hotel bar where he drew out his sacred circle and the lecture he was going to give at UCLA the next day. My eyes went backwards. Such a Zen like soul. I was crushed to learn he passed as there could have been so much more music and conversations.
