Let me tell you you're glad you do NOT encounter them because if they kidnap your party member, then there wouldn't been a possible way to save them. You would've gotten an optional fight with a powerful Joy Mutant and got the best defensive item in the game, but it's really not worth it to lose a party member.

I realize that i am very late to this party but just to answer your question about what happens when you take joy.... it depends. If you stuck on the same route that you did in this playthrough but took 3 joy before fighting hart, then you would get the joy ending for beltboy. But the biggest point at which joy makes a difference is at the sportsdome, which depending on which dialog options you choose or which character you give joy to, you either won't have a certain member like cyclops stick around until the convoy section or will have to fight their joy remains at the end of the convoy part( like when you find Liam's corpse). Hopes this explained some stuff to ya man, & keep doing what you do!
