Phil Svitak was an avid cyclist before joining the military. I had the honor of riding in the first memorial ride in Joplin, MO in 2002. I rode in a few more but a corporation bought the event and raised the entry fee so I stopped participating. A VFW post in Joplin was named after him, but closed down within a few years and I've never gotten an answer about why it was closed. Rest in peace, Sgt. Svitak. You are not forgotten.

I remember I was at Hunter Army Airfield in 1985. We were changing the floor out of a Huey and this Col came by from 160th. He said they were looking for mechanics that can do heavy mods on aircraft. They would take you away that day and give you a promotion within 30 days if you passed their PT test and looked like you were going to fit in the unit. We all looked at each other then the floor and each mumbled "Nah we are all good Sir. " Its shitty enough to work 8 hours a day in a sweaty georgia hanger then you have to put up with all that "Oorah" crap
